He was barely 20 at that time and never talked about it. When the TV series, Twelve O'clock High, began he watched it and that triggered a few stories. He said his squadron never lost a plane in combat because they flew in such a tight formation. He loved England and always wanted to go back for a visit.
The only thing I remember about Daddy talking about the war was when I was in the 6th grade doing a play about American History. One of my lines was something about "on the banks of Salerno and Normandy". My teacher had me pronouncing Salerno as Sa-lur-no. While practicing my lines, Daddy corrected my pronounciation and I asked how he knew. He said, "I was there". Needless to say, when I told my teacher, she let me pronouce the word correctly.
