After being told for years that I needed to read Tim Powers by people I respect, I finally started reading
On Stranger Tides last week. I started with that one because I wanted to read it before the new PotC movie came out, and also, well, pirates.
I think all you need to know about my reaction to this book is that the other night while reading it in bed, I started giggling uncontrollably. Emma looked at me and demanded an explanation. I said, "It's a bunch of pirates naviagting through a haunted Florida swamp and it's insanely awesome!" And then I started laughing again.
Last night, I made it about 2/3 of the way through the book, to this fight scene that really felt like it could have been the climatic sequence, but no way. Still 100 pages left, and it's just a set-up for what's too come. (I'm also impressed with how brutally Powers deals with some beloved characters. I was completely shocked by the death of one character, in particular.)
I haven't finished it yet, but I expect to in the next night or two.
So thanks, people! I am already trying to figure out which Powers book I will read next. Not next next, but sooner rather than later. (Anubis Gates? The Stress of Her Regard? Declare? Three Days to Never?)
(And I have no idea how any of this is going to work with Captain Jack Sparrow in the mix, but I hope it's at least half as fun as this book is.)
