Geek parenting!

Christine was at a meeting last night and I was home with the kids. Jackie asked if she could watch a show. We turned on the TV and a channel was showing Star trek: The Next Generation. It was 'The Offspring' (great episode) and it was in it's last five minutes. Jackie said, "Awww, it's over already?"

My heart swelled with pride. The fact that Jackie was disappointed that she missed an episode of Star Trek? It's a good feeling. I made it up to her by showing her 'Spock's Brain' on netflix. (Yeah, I know...that is an episode that people love to hate but it's also kind of perfect for an 8 year old. Jackie loved it)

It's so wonderful getting to share these geeky passions with your kids. Jackie loves Star Wars, Star Trek, superheros, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, She-Ra, and so many other things from both my and Christine's youths. It's so wonderful seeing her take to them.

Of course, not every attempt to share something from my childhood has been well met. Jackie deemed both 'The Dark Crystal' and 'Cloak & Dagger' "scary". I hope that when Kira is older that she'll take to 'The Dark Crystal' better than Jackie did. After all, she does share a name with one of the main characters.

As for Kira, she's only a little over a year old and I think we've done a good job geeking the kid out. She had a onesie that says, 'I just Boldly Went', another that says 'R is for R2D2', another that says 'P is for Princess' and had a picture of princess Leia on it...She's pretty much outgrown these, but she had them. Her room contains toys of both of her namesakes: Kira from Star trek: Deep Space Nine and Kira from The Dark Crystal. She also has an 8 x 10 picture of herself with Colonel Kira (Nana Visitor)

Parenting isn't easy, but I like to think that we're doing a halfway decent job. A few years ago we had jackie at Retro Con. She saw a coplayer dressed like Skelator. Jackie got excited and said, "Look, Mommy, it's Skelator!" The Skelator cosplayer was impressed and said, "That's good parenting." I'd like to think so.
