Odysseus and I went down to Manzanita for the 4th. We built a dam, but soon realized that two other groups had had the same idea, were working upstream, and had plentiful supplies of child labor. Much like a family of indigent Chinese farmers, our dreams were swept away by their mega-dams.
The beach there is over a mile long and it was full of people. Hundreds and hundreds of groups, lighting fires, setting off fountains, mortars, saturn whistles. Before long it looked as if we had entered the end times, only grim fire-flickers and shadows of men visible through the detritus haze. A man, clearly mad, ran amongst the camps waving the flag, crying "It's the best! You can't beat it!" When the main event began, the wreckage of our society concealed fully three-quarters of the display.
Regardless, it was totally worth it. A very cool sight.
