Scary Clones

Nov 26, 2005 10:53

After I discovered the whole repr0b8 versus reprob8 thing I had to investigate my own name to make sure there wasn't someone scary out there with whom I could be mistaken.

When I joined LJ, I really wanted either of koala or koalabear. At the time, both names were taken and I was extremely miffed about that and ended up with no choice but to choose koalathebear which I ( Read more... )

I'm just going off to bed - so sleepy! - but I'm leaving you this because there is a way to change usernames according to this. Just FYI, in case you were actually interested.

Thank you sleepy one. I think I can make do. The Tripey appears to appreciate the link though ;)

Fret not, surely in most cases it should be bloody obvious that you're not one and the same person, right? :)

The page of the typo never loaded - thankful for dial up for a change! I had been to your LJ via koala's links so I *knew* I was at the wrong place. Typing without specs or before coffee IS dangerous - we should always be careful & check our links. Save your $$.

Curse these pesky people who want to use our almost-names!

I wanted to be muridae, but that one was gone too. Gmail, Yahoogroups, here... some inconsiderate person has always got there and signed up before me. Seems like you just can't think up a decently unique pseudonym for yourself nowadays. :-(

And yes, friends do accidentally link to muridae all the time. If I see it I generally drop them an email or a comment to let them know, though fortunately while my "twin" is active they're fairly normal seeming.

*laugh* Yes, hence the 'x' and '123' and '001' that I see after people's names. I saw one person using an _ to distinguish but if you ask me that's probably too risky - a lot of people definitely wouldn't notice the _ I notice there's a wisteria and a wisteria_ and they're very different people!

Yes. She even has a similar layout to you albeit much pinker :) The other day, I saw that someone had linked to THEkoalabear which sounds even more arrogant than koalaTHEbear. :)

Yeah. General rule of thumb: if it's too pink, it's not me. I only go for magenta. ;-)

The "_x" is because I was trying to join an X-Files mailing list when I first hit this duplication dilemma. It would, of course, be simpler if it'd occurred to me that I might later want to use that variant elsewhere, and that not all places allow you to put underscores in your username.

koalathebear actually has a cute innocence about it. It brings to mind a five year old trying to keep track of their Beanie Babies or something. But yes, THEkoalabear probably is a little pretentious. We are all unique and distinct, but apparently some of us are also Special. :-)

I don't have a doppelganger out there, but then that's probably because there aren't many who would ever think to use the correctly spelled "sebaceanbabe." There are occasionally benefits to not knowing how to spell a cool word from your favorite show until after you've set up a user name. :P

I discovered the "reprob8" vs. "repr0b8" deal when I first started hanging out at Jeff's LJ and tried to link to it from mine. Luckily, I tested the link and found That Other Guy.

The Other Guy certainly made me blink.

*laugh* Well as I've mentioned to others, my original user name on the Internet was Kenny (I can't remember why) and my PASSWORD was koala. One day due to screwing up when inputting my details, I ended up being koala.

Have you found that LJ is only notifying you of SOME replies/comments but not of others? I still have to use the replies tool because for some reason I only get notified of half of my comments. Grrr argh! :)
