I was given some Terry Goodkind books to read when I was in university. I read a few and remember that some of the intense torture/bondage/sadism scenes didn't make for fun reading so I think I gave up after the first book in the The Sword of Truth series. The television series
Legend of the Seeker which is loosely based on the The Sword of Truth series is less intense than the books (although some of the bondage elements remain) and very watchable even if some bits of it are pretty bad. The Canadian hates it - hates Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander - his mannerisms and way of speaking. He's asked me to finish watching the series before he gets back from Canada :D
I don't care much for Zedd myself but I do very much like Richard Cypher and Kahlan Amnell. Poor Craig Parker has gone from playing the doomed somewhat effete elf Haldir to playing an evil overlord named Darken Rahl. Darken Rahl, apart from having a hilariously stereotypical Evil Name, is possibly one of the most ineffectual and pretty villains around.
Nonetheless, Legend of the Seeker has proved to be an excellent show to have on the television while I work on a jigsaw puzzle :) Some spoilers from season 1.
Kahlan and Richard are my favourite characters. Ignore the guy in the middle.
She's gorgeous and courageous
He's brave and well-meaning. I don't find him hot because his eyes make him look like a woodland creature. Like Bambi.
The thing I found the most jarring and bizarre was the introduction of the Mord'Sith. The Mord'Sith are an elite group of women warriors originating from D'Hara. They were created to serve as bodyguards to Darken Rahl. The Mord'Sith are basically bondage mistresses, 'trained' from an early age i.e. they're tortured and broken into submission and obedience until they will do absolutely anything her master/mistress tells her. they then go around doing this to other people. In keeping with the whole bondage theme, they wear their hair in a single, long braid and wear skin-tight leather clothing.
They wield a very phallic weapon called an Agiel which has the power to inflict unbearable pain or kill with only a touch.
The first Mord'Sith we meet is the undeniably fascinating Denna. She's very beautiful and reminds me of a cross between Sophia Myles and a blonde Tina Arena.
Like all Mord'Sith, she stands around striking dramatic poses - although perhaps it might be the skin tight leather forcing them to stand around like that.
Denna's phallic Agile.
Seriously how over the top and phallic is her first encounter with Richard???
Mistress Denna
She then proceeds to torture Richard - giving the show an opportunity to show off Richard's muscles.
Denna does get some dramatic camera angles
Richard gets to dangle there while she talks to his armpit
Denna basically says she's going to break him, make him submit, call her mistress blah blah blah
She starts to have Feelings for him.
Because he's nice to her despite the fact that she wants to break his spirit
She even kisses him!
Until she's interrupted
In case we weren't getting the whole mistress/slave/bondage thing ...
Unbelievably though, Richard's able to kill her ...
I was a bit disturbed by the scene when a resurrected Denna is being 'punished' by Darken Rahl. What's with the skirt????
And the dangling and the torture?
Why does Darken Rahl look like a creepy gypsy gigolo?
Again - what's with the skirt?
It's also kind of upsetting to see the proud, powerful Denna in this kind of situation
And then I couldn't help feeling so sorry for her when she begged to be killed rather than handed over to Rahl. I hope we see her character again - she's very interesting despite everything.
Then there's poor Kahlan. Normally she wears her elegant, lovely Confessor's robes (albeit they are impractical wear) and looks so beautiful and serene ...
... yet it's so obvious that this is a show run by men because they have to find an excuse to put Kahlen in the skin-tight outfit of a Mord'Sith. No idea where they got the outfit, but anyway. So of course she has to do the dramatic, slow-mo walk towards the camera.
She looks tough as hell in the outfit
But 'tis a little gratuitous.
I think I felt most sorry for her character when it was decided that they needed to be in disguise
Chase and Richard were ok
They got to pretend to be D'Haran soldiers in armour
Kahlan on the other hand gets to be a strumpet :P
What totally cracked me up was when we met Captain Ensor, a captain in the D'haran army.
That's Don Hany, a.k.a. Zane Malik from the Australian cop series
East West 101. Hee hee hee!!!
Anyway, the series was pretty awful at the beginning, but notwithstanding the Canadian's horror, I grew to like it as it developed, mostly because of Richard and Kahlan. I'll watch season 2 and I did find Cara an interesting character. It will continue to be my 'puzzle watch' show :)
