Zod never would have thought it would be possible for him to love again. When he failed to save his family, he thought his heart had lost the capacity to care for someone so deeply

She smiles softly at him, holding onto his hand in return, barely aware when the waitress sets their drinks down. She tries to think of something or somewhere they could go, but she's still so unfamiliar with Kansas that nothing comes to mind, so she shakes her head a little. "Not unless you can think of something," she tells him.
She's not looking forward to going home that evening, even though she knows she has to because for one, it's Wesley's birthday the next day and there's a party of some kind being planned, and secondly because of work.
"I'm perfectly content," he assures her softly, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "Let's just wait and see where we end up, shall we?"
Normally, Zod prefers to have a plan. Acting on a whim isn't something he's used to doing, but he really doesn't care where they go at the moment. As long as they're together, he'll be happy.
He glances down at his own drink, noticing its presence for the first time, and takes a sip. "It's good," he agrees after a moment. "But still not as good as the one you made me."
Cordelia relaxes at his reassurance and squeezes his hand in return. "I haven't either," she admits, leaning in closer to him as well. "And you mean a lot to me, too." A soft smile touches her lips.
Zod leans forward to kiss her softly, lifting a hand to her face. Once the kiss ends, he leans his forehead against hers and smiles.
"So how did they react?" he asks, watching her with amusement. "Tess must have been quite pleased with herself to finally discern who you are, and I'm guessing Miss Sullivan had no idea."
She grins a little. "Tess did seem pleased," she admits with a nod. "She said it was nice to put a face and a name with what she'd already figured out." There's amusement in her eyes. "Chloe was a little surprised but not shocked. They were both pretty nice."
She holds his gaze. "It's kind of weird actually."
He smiles at her and nods. "Well, I'm glad they were nice to you." And he's also a bit surprised. He's never heard anyone describe Tess as "nice" before.
After her last comment, he tilts his head to one side and looks at her questioningly. "What's kind of weird?"
She kisses him softly in return and when it ends, she takes a drink of her frappuccino. "So tell me more about this traveling you're planning," she says curiously. "Do you know any of the places you might be going?"
He takes a sip of his own forgotten frappuccino and considers for a moment before replying. "I'm still not completely sure. That's partially what Miss Sullivan is helping me figure out. There's also another woman I talked to a couple of weeks ago who might be willing to help. She's a diplomat, so bringing her along would certainly make sense. If she decides she would like to come, of course."
Zod tilts his head to one side curiously. "United Nations? That sounds familiar. I probably came across it during my research at some point, but it's not something anyone has really brought up. What is it?"
He gives her a sad smile and gazes at her intently. "I'll be all right. I'm bringing a small group of companions with me to ensure nothing goes too far. Perhaps a few of my soldiers, though not enough to arouse fear, as well as a few humans. Although, at this point, I'm not sure who they will be."
Zod sighs softly and lifts his hands to her chin, lightly pushing so that she's meeting his gaze once more. "Don't worry," he says softly, offering her a small smile. "At the first sign of anything going wrong, I'll leave. Try some other approach."
He meets her gaze again and considers for a moment before speaking. "I'm not sure. I've always known I'd have to communicate with humanity in this way at some point. I just don't want to act rashly and somehow ruin my chances in the future. When this planet's leaders realize that there are aliens here... I have to take my own people's safety into account, as well."
"Of course," she says, nodding slightly in understanding. "Maybe it would be safer if you didn't mention that you aren't from around here right away." She frowns a little. "And once they know your goals are the same as theirs, maybe they'll be more accepting."
Zod gives her a slight nod in return and ponders her words. "I suppose that might be safer, yes. The woman I spoke of earlier might have some ideas on that, as well, since she's a diplomat by profession." He takes a deep breath and manages another small smile. "But we'll figure it out. As I said, there's still a lot of planning that needs to be done before I can even start making arrangements to leave. And I should probably call some sort of meeting between myself and the people involved in the near future. To make sure we're all on the same page and discern more specifically how we're going to proceed."
