I really want to Be My Own Boss (BMOB), as they say. I tried Mary Kay and that was a spectacular failure. Apparently there are a lot of former MK Ladies who feel the same way I do about it. I'm sure that MK is a great business for some people and they love it and feel so happy with the choice and all that. Me, not so much. I'm trying to think about what I'm good at, and what I can do with it.
I'm a former teacher, and I'm good at that. I'm not good at being a "classroom teacher" because I really hate classroom rules and regs. The soul-crushing aspect of the job requirements were just never my thing. As a former MATH teacher, I felt like soul-squisher-in-chief. Ugh. I'm thinking I could go back to tutoring kids on the side. I could either tutor from home if I had the space, or I could drive to peoples' homes.
Mom and I are also getting into writing again. Mom wants to "include" me, but we both know she's going to be doing most of the writing and bouncing random ideas off me. That's fine. But I want to write, too. I'm thinking that if I can combine my love o'writing and my super awesome math teacher skills, I could...wait for it...write math texts! I'm thinking that instead of writing books that are progressions through what you're "supposed" to know in a given year, I could write subject matter books. Like a series of books on the coordinate plane, and everything you need to know from the basic basics through graphing quadratics. The book could list prerequisite skills in the first page or two, before the TOC. Like for graphing lines, you need to have basic algebra (solving for X). Yes, I am indeed thinking of home-schoolers as my major market. But they could also be used in the classroom as supplementals.
The big reason I want to do something like this is that I really hated math when I was in school. It wasn't until college that I learned it and loved it. I would like to spare some kids that drama. All of the kids I've tutored in recent years have been kids who just HATED math. And they all tell me that I'm fun and funny and that they learn a lot from me. I like to draw little pictures for them, things to be funny and remove the dramadramadramadramadramadramadramadrama.
