The Beginnings of Life

Mar 10, 2008 18:22

Ok, look. I know nobody really reads this anymore, but I'm irritated and I'm going to rant now. In case you happen to be a pro-abortion person and you wander across my blog, I hope you'll take a moment to read this and maybe stop saying things that aren't right.

On the subject of IVF treatments, there is much contention. We were having a discussion on a board I frequent, and someone said that an embryo is "just a bunch of cells" and "no more human than a skin scraping." He also said that it's not alive and wouldn't ever BE alive if left on its own. Un-fucking-true.

An embryo has the beginnings of a brain at 4 weeks. At 5 weeks, its brain is developing quite nicely, thank-you-very-much. And while it is true that the embryo doesn't start to look like a human until about Week 7 or so, it's not "a bunch of undifferentiated cells."
For the first few days, that IS true. And that is typically when the implanting is attempted. However, saying that "if left alone, they'll never be human" is like saying a baby isn't alive because, left alone, it can't survive. OF COURSE IT CAN'T! It's a fucking BABY. It can't feed itself! Same goes for the embryo, if you put it in a petri dish and left it to itself, it would not survive because it would not have any nourishment. It would not "become a human" because it would DIE before it hand the chance to look cute enough that you think it deserves to live!

So, STOP SAYING THAT! It's a lie. It's a dirty, damnable lie and if you didn't know better before, you do now. And if you did know better but just don't care, then God have mercy on you, because you support the wholesale slaughter of innocent life for No. Good. Reason.

rants, politics
