This year I've googled Tebow (really?) and found out who Adele was. The latter only came about because Whitney Houston died, really. Whitney's death was Grammy weekend, which caught my parent's eyes. Thus, as I lesson plan in the dining room (convenience), I am beholden to what my parents watch. I work on a laptop that does not have internet access. So, the Grammy's played and I found out about Adele.
Perhaps I mentioned my curmudgeonly response to the Oscar's this year, too (which are Sunday!). Most mornings I am wanting to soothe myself with the sounds I know, so I put on the cd player. As if my subconscious knew, I turned to NPR. My immediate reaction to hearing Oscar coverage was "what the fuck?! I want news, not this garbage! fuck the Oscars!" The last time I truly got incensed about the Oscars was when Crash came out and won awards. I don't think it should have been nominated for an Oscar; it deserves Razzies, but that is another rant from this crank for another time that may never happen.
My interest in the Oscars has not been that low since the year of The English Patient. Incidentally, that was probably the first year I tried to make it my tradition to watch the show but I mostly just chatted with my family. That was part of the era of family time, when we actually all would watch television together, my parents and sister and myself. That was part of the 90s, my 90s.
Since then, father is beholden to watching FOX News and MSNBC. Mother, following the death of her parents, has very much so renounced English language television, the recent Grammy Awards being an obvious exception. In the era of binge watching and Hulu and Netflix, not much tv is viewed, really. Similar circumstances as the Grammy situation led to the 3 of us "watching" the Superbowl (as with the Grammys, I had no real knowledge of what was going on). But it is amusing. These bring up moments for all of us asking "Do you know who so and so is?" Or "why is this person important?" "Have you heard of them?" "Is that really so and so? They've aged!" Usually, because of age, I am the transmitter of knowledge. A few years back, when Lady Gaga was in, I had to explain her to my parents --even though it was my sister that listened to her non-stop.
Movies are always another issue. Again, as my relevance wanes, it also becomes apparent that my parents know even less. It has been more than 5 years since mom went, and about 3 since dad went. It is hard to coordinate movies between us.
Where does all this leave any of us? I'm not sure. I just know that the way things are, I may end up seeing the Oscars with my parents, all of us equally perplexed by the movies and recipients. I'll be lesson planning, of course. Did you know that Alexander Payne had a new movie?
