I'll be frank, Neverending Stroy is THE film of my childhood - I've seen it 50 times, I cried (cry!) every time Artax dies, I cheer for Bastian when he rides Falcor, I'm scared of Morla and Gmork and I sing along to the song. And since it's so deeply imprinted in my mind, I did wonder several times, how deep the fantasies go and yes, I mean SLASH FICS.
Think about it, it's all about the children's imagination but I know for a fact (though it is creepy) that a lot of slashers, especially in young fandoms like HP and Glee are quite young - 14, 12 even. Do they count? If they imagine Kurt and Puck holding hands or Snape and Harry gazing dreamily into each other eyes... is there somewhere in Fantasia where pretty young guys like to hold each other hands and declare their undying love? Is first base ok but when you hit the second - you're out? I mean, Gmork says it's apathy, lack of imagination and cynicism that kills fantasia, not adult sexing. (Yes, every time you deny that Puckurt may happen or say you enjoyed the Marvel Civil War, it's like you are stabbing The Childlike Empress in the face with a hopelessness-shaped pencil). It's about innocence - but there can be innocent deepthroting and filthy kissing, so who draws the line; or is it magical?
And since it's actually never stated explicitly it's CHILDREN'S imagination but imagination in general - does Kirk and Spock have their own small state? Does beings like Spider-Man belong there? What about those adults from places like AFF.net - do they have their own corner filled with dominatrixes and sextoy shops?
We know that TV kills imagination but watching TV makes [some] people write are read fics and that takes a lot of imagination and I, for example, had been doing it since I was 15 or even less.
Fun fact: Jack Black was in The Neverending Story 3.
Fun fact I mentioned before: Sam Rockwell was in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtels.
I'm pretty sure my journal just jumped the shark. A naked gay shark.
