I think you may have just broken my brain. And possibly warped my childhood (but not as much as the porn star Power Ranger).
Regarding your last paragraph, I am suddenly thinking of the crackiest crossoever to have ever cracked. Seriously. I want to draw a map (I was a big imaginary map drawer when I was a kid) of the pop culture version of Fantasia with all the different fandom territories, and the little ship city/states within each one. There's trade (crossovers), and (flame) wars, and unification marriages (usually in the comic lands - all those damn team-up books).
Yeah, you've broken my brain. Happy? ;P

But yeah, I loved drawing the imagnary maps when I was young as well. Now I'm sad thought that I am bringing war to Fantasia, as we all know that flame wars are, were and always will be, especially between different ships. Sad but unavoidable.

I do, however, like to think it's about children's imagination (or at least the more innocent parts of fantasy) because otherwise there would be so many different universes for every character ever dreamed up, that it's insane (eight thousand Kirks banging eight thousand Spocks in every way you can think of! At the same time!), but this really is some nice food for thought.

I think it's more about representaton, which means there is one slashy couple that represents all, one yaoi couple, one femmslash etc.
