We Love Everyone In This Shatterdome
Sooooo... hi, LiveJournal. Looks like I last posted here two years ago. I want to assure friends here that I do still read everything posted to (the slowly dwindling active fraction) of my friends' list. But I'm afraid I just don't really live here anymore.
But for the small number of people here who don't follow me on twitter or tumblr: we ran a brand new little convention, Shatterdome Atlanta, for fans of Pacific Rim, and it was mind-blowingly amazing. I was Director of Programming, akiko was co-chair; it was a bunch of work and one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. (Also huge shout-outs to our other staff; Ops and Security and PR, all amazing people we couldn't have done it without, who afaik don't have LJs.) The outpouring of happiness and thanks from attendees on tumblr and facebook was more than I could ever hope for.
Also it was pretty *technically* amazing. The thing started with like $300 in seed money from the founders, had nine months from inception to execution, attracted ~150 attendees, and ended up in the black. As a niche-interest con. Pacific Rim fans are dedicated and awesome.
And of course the other mind-blowing thing that happened was, due to utter luck and coincidence, one of the actual Pacific Rim actors, Rob Kazinsky (Chuck Hansen), crashed the con for about an hour near the end of the day, agreed to be a celebrity judge for the costume contest, did about 15 min of improv Q&A, and posed for a group photo. Luck smiled on our efforts like whoa.
Heh, so originally I was just going to pop in and link to stuff I've already posted elsewhere, and here I am writing a book, because LJ is actually good for discussion. I do miss LJ sometimes, but the network effect is running so thin...

Also, last weekend I went to Animazement for a day and proved I can still pull off my Jigen costume if I use some dye in my beard. :/
