Right, time for the big Dragon*Con post.
First, the not so good stuff. As many of you know, C's recurring illness hit again right before con, and we ended up spending a couple mornings at ER and urgent care centers. Once we got her most recent antibiotics switched to something that *didn't* give her side effects worse than the disease she started doing better, and made it to some stuff on Sunday. The disability badge sticker was a life-saver. She's doing considerably better now.
Also, apologies in advance for the linked pictures, which I didn't have time to make smaller or orient properly.
Anyway, stuff what I did. Carpooled down with
shinshan,
kurai_seraphim, and G. Stood in the pre-reg line for four hours. Woulda been five if our last names didn't begin with fortuitous letters. Oy.
Friday, after the ER, made it to the B5 guests panel, which was just Claudia (Ivanova) and Jason (Marcus), but was plenty of fun. Did a first pass of some dealer's rooms to plan budgeting. Took some costume pictures (more on both of those below).
Saturday was Urgent Care in the morning, then got in a long-ass line for the main Firefly panel, which was great. This year we had Morena (Inara), Jewel (Kaylee), Sean (Simon), and Summer (River). The first few minutes were taken up by Nathan (Mal) and Alan (Wash) calling in about borrowing and wrecking people's cars until Jewel made everyone silence their cell phones. Good to see Firefly still packs 'em in. Then I was off to a Dragon Quest IX meetup that I organized, which was quite successful - we got probably 20 or 30 people over a few hours, and someone with awesome Japanese maps showed up to trade, so I'm now pretty set for post-game. We also had a little Taking Time meetup (the forums over at
GameSpite where I write sometimes) which was fun. Later in the evening I did a pass through the Rainbow Flag party (which wasn't really as hopping as previous years) and the Shindig, but mainly took a lot of cosplay photos.
Sunday. No emergencies, hooray! Caught a Tom Smith hall concert in the morning. Then, with the disability pass, we sat in the front of a panel with
the Phelps (Weasley) twins. They're fun dudes. Then I think we did a little shopping, sat in the back of a panel on Politics in SF (which wasn't bad, at least until audience questions), and then went to a repeat
Ivanova and Marcus panel, which was great until Claudia got too annoyed at getting interrupted all the time and left. Ah well. Then we retired to the room to watch the Masquerade on con TV (with some beer for me; sadly C couldn't partake due to meds). Later I put on my infamous purple pirate costume and headed over to the now combined Pirates and Time Travellers Ball, where a good time was had all around.
Monday was one last pass for last-minute dealer's room deals, then back on the road. Shinshan lost a contact at the con, so this time I took driving duties through NC. Finally home, and lots of sleep.
So, more pictures. First off, loot:
Tarot set by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. We have some of her prints. She rocks.
Sweet rare old Japanese art books. Slightly pricy, but from a guy who likes to haggle so we got down to nearly reasonable, and these are nice finds. Arislan designs by Amano, Vampire Princess Miyu, and friggin' Legend of Galactic Heroes. Also a Devil's Panties book I picked up while visiting Jennie's booth, which is tradition.
Ridiculous bento-themed mini-figs from Macross Frontier. Silly and adorable. C has claimed these for her own in exchange for letting me buy other last-minute stuff.
Other sweet figures. Clockwise form the top, a really nice statue of Oscar from Rose of Versailles, the esper Mateus from FFXII, Nadia from Secret of Blue Water, Linebeck from Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, a cute steampunk Cthulhu dude, and Ranka from Macross Frontier.
Goreous art nouveau prints from Echo Chernik. C pointed out this lady, and she does good stuff. Got a deal on five prints.
Finally, notable costumes:
This Mandalorian looks like she was drawn by AmanoAn FFXIII group including *amazing* Shiva Sisters
Lots of people wear Jayne hats, but it takes special inspiration to
dress *as* Jayne's hatTerra. FFVI cosplay makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
One Piece. This one is just for
skuldchan.
I'll stop there so this post isn't too enormous, but you can find a larger set of photos with reasonably descriptive names by just checking out
my whole D*C10 directory.
I think I'm gonna try out those cross-post buttons though... let's see if they do anything disastrous.
