I have these internal moments of realizing my own prejudice that make me uncomfortable but are very hard to surmount. A recent moment had to do with young girls/women whose ambition is to be a stay-at-home wife/mother. My grandmother passed away just over a week ago (it happened Sunday the 12th). She was the last grandparent I had. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my feelings about abortion. I’ve always been pro-choice, and I essentially remain so; however, I’m a lot less comfortable with abortion after having my own child, and having been tempered in the fire of new motherhood into a place of strong maternal instincts. It’s insane what long term care costs (and yet, the workers tend to be paid rather little, considering the needs put upon them…). The thought of putting down at least a little towards that sort of expense seems wise.

Still, after all the grave thoughts of mortality, I felt like I could use a rather stiff drink.

I went ahead and booked my travel for next week despite a number of somewhat vague and confusing messages. I'm flying in Tuesday, and as I was flying into New Hampshire, I thought I would see how far that actually was from the town where my grandmother lives.

It's only an hour away!

Chuck and I had a great long holiday weekend of family house-hopping and a super Christmas at the Iverson house. I keep forgetting how bloody NICE it is to visit my parents' home. It has a nice feng shui, is spacious without being uncozy and cold, and there's always food around especially around holidays.
