Best Books of 2014

Dec 23, 2014 11:00

So it's fast approaching the end of the year so time to start end of the year lists. Since I definitely will not finish the current book I am reading Unbroken: A WWII story of Survival by the New Year my reading list for 2014 is pretty much set. Full Reading List Here

Sadly I barely read any more than last year despite having much more time (last year I had classes on top of work) so no excuses.

My 3 Favorite Fictional Books Last year I had a clear favorite book this year it was a bit harder to decide but 3 books definitely came on top all I would give 5 stars.

1) An Officer and a Spy
2) The Golem and the Jinni
3) All the Lights We Cannot See

Two historical fiction (although it could be argued that Officer and a Spy is 99% non-fiction, it's just how it is told that makes it fiction) and one fantasy story set in an a historical setting. Historical fiction used to be my favorite genre before I got into fantasy/sci-fi and I think its switching back a bit.

I also read quite a few Doctor Who books this year: both novelizations of serials, original stories, and the autobiographies of Frazer Hines and Elisabeth Sladen. Of these I do have a definite favorite and that would be the novelization of Evil of the Daleks which has become one of my favorite Doctor Who stories.

As far as non-fiction goes I mainly read film related bios and autobios all of which I enjoyed but if I have to choose I think I would go with Harpo Marx's autobiography Harpo Speaks because he lived an interesting life during interesting times. My favorite chapters were when he visited Russia in the 1930's.
