The Final Fruits Basket Volume

It's very exciting but I finally finished the last Furuba Volume today. I've been collecting the series for about 6 years now I believe. Now I did read the manga online quite awhile ago (back when I actually read scanlations online) so it's not like this is the first time I am reading the ending. But it is still exciting to finish collecting a series. It takes so long for manga series that I collect to finish in the US that every time I actually finish one it is a big deal to me. One less thing I have to buy.

So even though I read these chapters years ago these are my final thoughts on the series

Overall I was very satisfied with Fruits Basket. Manga wise it's definitely still my favorite shoujo (Princess Tutu has probably surpassed it anime wise). I love the characters and the ending. It just makes me feel good inside.

If I have one complaint (and I know I've mentioned this before) is how ridiculous it was that every single character (except Kagura and Momiji) were paired up with someone. And the fact of the matter is a lot of these romances felt cheap and had little development. I know the manga-ka wanted to give an ending to every character. But having each character romantically involved with someone was not the way to do it.

Now that being said I did love the romances of the main three Tohru/Kyo was developed beautifully. And is definitely in my top 5 of favorite anime/manga pairings. I also really loved Yuki/Machi and although it might not be as high in my favorites as Tohru/Kyo I was still happy Yuki found that type of happiness in the end. I don't think every character needed to be paired up but Yuki I for one was pleased about.

As for the other pairings I guess I liked Rin/Hatsuharu, Hiro/Kisa, Hatori/Mayu & Kakeru/Komaki. The rest of the Furuba pairings I could honestly do without. But I would even do without some of the above 4 just so there were less romances.

As for other things I love in the last volume I loved how we got to see each of the Juunishi's first moments with Tohru as they thought of saying goodbye to her. I also liked that they let Yuki have a real goodbye with her (although Tohru didn't end up with Yuki, their relationship was still special to me). I also loved Kyo & Yuki giving each other a hard time in the end just for old time sakes. But you could tell from their smiles that it was all in jest. Takaya really did handle the main 3 quite well.

Finally I loved that in the end we didn't just see Tohru/Kyo as husband/wife or even as parents but as grandparents. That is quite honestly one of the sweetest endings to a series ever. Of course sometimes I prefer bitter sweet endings but in the case of Furuba I am glad these characters got a deserved happy ending. And I am glad that Takaya showed me that without a doubt their happiness did last.

So overall while I did have a couple issues with the series it was a wonderful journey.
