Bernd swept Amber up in his arms, a dopey, lopsided grin on his face. “Who is this irresistible creature, who has an insatiable love for the dead?” he growled. Bernd waltzed her around the yurt, singing, “Nah naaah nah-nah, living dead girl.”
Amber snorted in amusement. “Living dead girl,” she chuckled. “Although, if you’re not careful, you’ll wake the baby.”
He continued to hum along the song playing on his cell phone. “Living dead girl.”
“I’m serious, Bernd.” Amber stopped waltzing and stepped back. “Fief is teething and I just got him to sleep.”
“Oh…” He slipped the phone out of his jeans’ back pocket and turned off the song.
“I’m sorry.” She sighed. Amber hated how she felt like she was the ruiner of all things fun lately. She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around him. “I promise it’ll get better and he’ll sleep again,” she hoped, trying to convince herself as much as Bernd.
“Yeah…” The right side of his mouth slowly curved upwards in a lopsided grin.
“So until then…” Amber smiled back at him.
“Mario Kart!!”
Amber leaned her forehead on his chest. “Just don’t get too loud, okay?”
“Okay!” Bernd kissed the top of her head. “Can I be Peach?”
“Sure, as long as I can be Donkey Kong.”
“Deal!”
