Didi set out the pumpkin cupcakes; he had made for dessert, on a wooden tray, which he placed on the table in front of the window in the dining room. He and Tino were hosting their first Thanksgiving together and he wanted everything to be “perfect.” He hoped Bernd would like them since they were not a “white” cake like his picky brother preferred. He hoped the orange buttercream frosting, fondant leaves, and sugar pumpkins decorating the cupcakes would make up for it. Otherwise, Bernd would have to either have a slice of homemade pumpkin pie, or piece of the angel food cake he made the other day.
He quickly forgot his dessert woes, when everyone began to arrive. It was nice having them all at the same time. Usually Bernd would bring the kids over and Amber always stopped by for cake and coffee, especially on Tino’s days off from the gallery, when they would sit and discuss art or sit and sketch together. James and Cesare often came over for dinner and sometimes Vati and Onkel Luigi also joined them for dinner. But this was the first time Greta and Mishka were eating over, not to mention Denis and Michelle.
Dinner was, as Bernd would put it, awesome. The turkey, despite being slightly over-cooked, was still delicious. The gravy and mashed potatoes were miraculously free of lumps, and the baked sweet potatoes were perfect. Vati’s pumpkin soup was delicious as always and Onkel’s Luigi’s mesclun salad with goat’s cheese and sherry vinaigrette turned out to be a big hit. Everyone loved the zucchini that Cesare made and James’ cranberry sauce, which was simply two cans of the stuff heated up. The wine Denis and Michelle brought, along with a bottle of grape juice for the kids, paired perfectly with the meal. Didi, much to his chagrin, found he liked the crescent rolls Greta and Mishka made better than his own. He even had a good laugh over the fact that they were the kind that was found in the refrigerated section of the supermarket, next to the premade cookie dough.
After the dinner dishes were cleared from the table and dinner had a chance to settle, everyone gathered around the dining room table for dessert. Tino set out the coffee and tea, while Didi went to get the pies he had made along with the cupcakes. Little Maria and Fritz loved the fall cupcakes that Onkel Didi made, especially since Onkel Tino let them enjoy them in the living room, where they sat, watching the TV. The adults basically helped themselves. Didi held his breath while Bernd looked over the desserts. His brother seemed torn between a slice of apple pie and a cupcake, before settling on both. Apparently, the fact that neither choice was what he called “white food” did not matter. Bernd ate them both and even had room for a sliver of pumpkin pie. It was at that moment, Didi knew their Thanksgiving was a success.
