It was an unusually hot Vinefest, but despite the heat, the people were enjoying themselves just like they did every year. The Grande Duke Alexander Saint-Germaine and his beloved Kitten, Pashmina were taking a break by the new fountain in the town square. The fountain was a birthday gift from the king’s cousin, the artist Vega della Rosa and it had become a popular meeting place.
The fountain was large and decorated with various sea nymphs, water babies, hippocampi, and large sea dragons. At the top of the fountain, stood the King of the Sea in all his naked glory, with water flowing from a large shell he held in his hand. Since it was so hot, the lower pool of the fountain had people sitting on the edge, while naked children romped in the water. Finding an empty seat, Pashmina sat down and fanned himself with his hand. “Ooh, it’s hot!”
“Yeah,” Alex agreed. “Would you like me to get you something cool to drink? Or would you rather have some shaved ice?”
“Tough choice, but I think a cup of lemon water would be really refreshing.” Pashmina started to get up.
“Sit, my dear.”
“Yes, your Alexness!” Pashmina giggled. He was more than happy to sit there as it was cool by the water. Whether it was the sound of it falling into the pools below, or getting splashed by playing children, Pashmina did not care. It felt good and that’s all that mattered.
Alex returned with two lemon waters. As luck would have it, a woman, who had been sitting next to his beloved Kitten, got up to chase after her child, who was causing a ruckus in the fountain. He quickly sat down and handed a mug of lemon water to Pashmina.
“Aaah…” Pashmina said when he finished drinking. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, smirking at the look Alex gave him. “What? It was good!”
Alex laughed and shook his head. He drank his lemon water. Unlike his beloved Kitten, he took his time finishing his drink. “I’ll need to return their mugs.”
“Maybe one of children running around here can do it for you.”
“They’re naked, my dear, and most people would frown upon us calling them over and giving them a few coins, even if it is payment for returning a few mugs to a vendor.”
Pashmina bit his lip. His beloved did have a point. “You’re right, your Alexness. Do you want me to return them?”
“Sit. I’ll do it.”
Alex got up and left his Kitten by the fountain. While he gone, Pashmina looked over his shoulder at the children splashing behind him in the fountain. He scooted around so that he could dip his hands into the cool water of the fountain. Pashmina reached up and patted his cheeks. His wet hands felt good against his skin and he reached back down again to wet them. Sitting up, Pashmina was unprepared for the shaggy dun-colored mutt that was headed his way. The dog, intent on playing with the children in the fountain, launched himself at Pashmina, expecting the Kitten to get out of his way, like everyone else did. Pashmina had no time to react and as a result went over backwards into the fountain. Hampered by his clothes, he struggled to push his head up out of the water.
Alex, who had seen the whole thing, hurried over to help his beloved up. Pashmina, in his panic, had pulled a couple of men, who were trying to help him up, into the fountain, much to the delight of the children. Alex became another victim, not that he minded. It was actually very refreshing, sitting there soaking wet with his beloved. Once Pashmina calmed down, Alex chuckled at the kitten’s appearance.
“What’s so funny?”
“You’re quite the sight, my dear.”
“Oh…” Pashmina was not amused.
“Your hair’s all down; your make-up’s a mess, your hat…” Alex reached behind the kitten. “I think I need to get you another one.”
Pashmina took the hat from him. “Yeah…” He plopped it back on his head and wiped at his face with his hands. “Better?”
“Better.” Alex stood up. He held out his hands and pulled his beloved to his feet.
“Thanks,” Pashmina said as he took Alex’s arm. They waded over to the edge of the fountain and were met by a couple of members of the Royal Guard, who were there to keep the peace.
“Can I help you?” Alex said to them?
“Your lordship knows that the fountain is for the children only,” the shorter of the two guardsmen said.
Alex nodded.
“Then what were you and her ladyship…?” The other guardsmen said. He stared at Pashmina, before shaking his head, and continuing, “Doing?”
“Dancing in the fountain?” Pashmina said with a smile, although the guardsmen were not amused. “No?”
“Her ladyship happened to fall in and I rescued her.” Alex climbed out of the fountain and helped his beloved out.
“It’s true,” Pashmina said.
One of men, who had tried to help the Kitten, came over to them. “It’s true. This stupid dog knocked her in and I…” he trailed off at the look the guardsmen gave him. Smiling ingratiatingly, the man quickly left.
Alex nodded. “That’s exactly what happened and if you don’t mind, I need to get her ladyship back to our rooms before she gets sick.” He looked at Pashmina, who sneezed. “Now, if you’ll excuse us.” Alex pushed past the guardsmen, his beloved Kitten clinging to his arm. Ignoring the guardsmen, they made their way to the where the various vendors were set up and it was not long before they were lost in the crowd.
“My hero,” Pashmina said with a smile.
“You’re welcome.” Alex exchanged glances with his Kitten. He chuckled as Pashmina giggled. “That was a close, eh?”
Pashmina nodded. “And despite nearly drowning, a fun one!”
