Work Escapades

People really annoy me sometimes. And I really hate that customers are allowed to use the kiosks to look up books for themselves. They come and browse sometimes, and then I can't get much done, because I can't look anything up. By this point, I've worked in the section long enough that I do have a pretty good handle on most of the popular books, as well as where things I don't recognize are likely to be. But it's still easier if I can look stuff up. Which I can't do while other people are using my computer. So I try and speed to process up by asking if I can help them find something - I even try to pre-empt the kiosk use at all by asking them before they get there. But noooooo, they simply must look it up for themselves, and no they certainly can't take 2 seconds to tell me what they're looking for. Which kind of annoys me because most of them don't type very fast, so it'd be much faster for them to tell me, and if I know where it is, they can get it that much faster. But no, instead they'll painstakingly poke out each word, while I attempt to busy myself with something else. This particularly annoys me because nine times out of ten, they'll come looking for me two minutes later, because they found the entry on the computer but don't know how to tell a) if we have it in the store, b) in what section to find it, or c) where said section is. And at least half of those times, either someone else will be using the computer, or it'll have reverted back to the homepage, so I'll have to look the whole thing up again for them in order to find it, and they often haven't actually noted any pertinent details like title or author anyway.

I'm not sure that was entirely coherent. Sorry.

Anyway, one of my amusements today was a call towards the end of the shift. Reception pages anyone on the first floor take this call, so I did, and it was a merch question. I don't know a bloody thing about merch, so I told the lady I'd go find J, who was working merch tonight. I felt sort of bad handing this woman off to poor J, cuz I could tell she was going to be difficult, but since I really couldn't answer her questions, I had to. I listened to J's end, and it went something like this: "No, those aren't on sale... Only the office supplies are on sale... 30% off... No, those aren't on sale... The office supplies are 30% off... No, those aren't on sale... Just the office supplies..." Etc. Now, I don't know J all that well, but she's one of those people who's fairly smallish and cute, and even has a cute little voice to go with it, so her muttering "Stupid bitch" upon getting off the phone just highly amused me... Although I'm pretty sure you had to be there.

And the Stupid Customer of the Day Award goes to the lady who tried to ride the down escalator up. Now, I will fully admit that the escalators are counterintuitive in the directions they run, because you have to get on the one to left, not the right. I get that, and until I got used to it, I was one of the many people who just naturally headed for the wrong one quite often. But this lady watched me coming down the escalator toward her. She was looking at me, apparently thinking I was magically floating down the up escalator, when she went to step onto it to go up. I swear she almost banged right into me. Dumbass.

That is all.
