How much can you squeeze into one weekend?

Jun 18, 2007 17:40

I got to answer that to an extent this weekend. Friday ended with my dropping funbearsd off at the airport. I played some Amy Winehouse for his swan song (he gave me a copy of her disc) and I helped him drag all seven of his bags to the curb. We had stopped off at Matt's on the way so that the three of us along with Douglas could have one last cocktail with Cocktail. I'll say it again, the end of an era...

Jeff, Matt, Douglas, and I at SoDec '02 followed with the "Buy Me A Cocktail" Tags from the same trip...

LA Greets me...

Saturday I headed for a ride with the boys and then I went up North and met my net friend, Scott, for the first time. Handsome fellow with these great blue eyes. We walked around Hollywood for a bit, stopped at Amoeba to see aairplane and get advice on where to eat, and then had some sushi for dinner. Enjoyed getting to know Scott better and made plans to meet him later at the Eagle when the show was over.

The Fratellis show was awesome!!! They have so much energy and damn, they just rocked the fuckin' place. The crowd was a little bit on the jaded LA side but the folks around me were havin' fun and I was havin' a blast. They played the entire album along with a new song (that had some great hooks and a lot of bounce). Flathead was fast and furious and Chelsea Dagger just exploded all over us. It was SO worth the wait!!! Did I even mention that their based player is a total cutie?

Fratellis on Stage

When the show ended I saw a guy who looked kinda familiar... he came on up and said "you're a friend of Andy's right?" (aka fakeplasticbear). Turns out his name was Jack and we had met once before. He invited me for a beer at this hole in the wall rock n' roll bar around the corner and we had a good time talkin' about music - and the bar was a great spot, will have to remember that for next time. I realized it was almost 11pm so I said my goodbyes and headed towards the Eagle.

Oh wow - almost forgot, was walking towards my car when who did I see sitting on a rail with some folks not 20 feet away but the cutie bass player of the Fratellis!?! So here's the scene:
Me: You guys played a great show tonight
Him: (in cute accent) thanks mate
Me: Missed you guys in SD when you had to cancel the show...
Him: Worth the wait though, eh?
Me: Oh man, it was totally worth the wait! Thanks!
Him: Cheers mate...
Me: (walks dazed back to my car)...

Spotted soundbear69 driving home from work but couldn't get his attention - small world!

Drive to the Eagle while exchanging txts with Scott and arrived to find out it was Rubber/Latex Night - Woofy! Got my beer and found Scott and we enjoyed people watching and especially enjoyed seeing people get vacuum sealed on the pool table in giant plastic bags (you have to see it and I totally want to try it!). Ran into Brad and got him a birthday beer. Gave some hugs to Charlie (owner) who was decked in rubber overall/shorts. Continued to talk with Scott and admire his blue eyes. rrumm showed up and more fun was had. It wasn't long before lodging was finalized and the evening closed out as evenings sometimes do...

In the morning I drove over to the house of ADA (moroccomole, djmrswhite, aairplane) for Dave White's famous pancakes. Was nice to lounge with 'em and I got to meet their nextdoor neighbor who stopped by to have pancakes and tell tales. The pancakes were on the upper side of the awesome scale and Dave White gets extra points for having two kinds of syrup (neither of which were low sugar) as well as enough sausages that you could have more than two. I could have stayed there all after noon but I wanted to head out to see the play that Rob directed so I gave my tugs and off I went.

Walked into the theater and saw Chip and we caught up. Met his buddy from Ohio that is out for a visit. The play was enjoyable and I could see the Rob inspired touches here and there. That boys got talent says I. Keep an eye on him. Extra points for having a Road Rules alumni in the cast. I come to find out that Chip and company are going to head to our mutual friends' place for dinner and hanging out (Jim and John) and I pleased when he invites me along. Jim and John are both The Hot and The Awesome and I hadn't seen 'em since Coachella and that was only for a few minutes as we were headed in different directions...

Jim and John (and Jim again)

So the original plan was to get pizza but the place we were gonna go to was closed so instead the boys grilled chicken and just about everyone helped out (I helped by staying out of everyone's way) to make some great food. There's something to be said for sitting at a table with a bunch of folks whose friendship you value and opinions you respect. Good conversation and good times. We followed it up with Rob-made dessert and Lilo and Stich on the big screen (which I had never seen - fun flick!).

I said my goodbyes around 11pm and was on the road by 11:20 and home by 1am (yup, I made kick ass time!)

All in all, an exceptional weekend. I'm a lucky guy (luckier still knowin' that Scott'll be down for a visit before too long)...

friends, being lucky, la, good times, concerts, music
