Spock didn’t even wince, standing up gracefully instead and offering the captain’s chair to Kirk. The captain sighed.
“Couldn’t you pretend for once that I caught you off guard?”
Spock looked at him quizzically. “For what purpose?”
“I don’t know - live a little?”
Spock was now studying him like he was some incredibly interesting specimen. Kirk sighed again and shook his head.
“Never mind.”
“Curious,” Spock said. “This is your sixty-fourth attempt to ‘ambush’ me while I occupy the captain’s chair. Is there some significance to this action?”
“Not really.” Kirk grinned. “It’s just that you always look so cozy when you sit here that I can’t help it. You know - I just can’t seem to stand peace and tranquility.”
Spock gave him an eyebrow. “Next time we encounter the Klingons, Captain, you should probably defect. You seem to share most of their... imperatives.”
Kirk snorted. “Why, thank you, Mr. Spock. Your good opinion means so much to me.”
“Yes, Captain, I can see you going out of your way to earn it,” Spock said, looking at Kirk’s overly relaxed pose with just that much sarcasm.
“You’re hard to please.”
“Have you tried?”
“Would you like me to?”
And damn him, Spock very nearly smiled, making Kirk shift in his seat, as far from comfortable as humanly possible.
“I do not believe you will be - up to the task,” Spock said, the superior bastard that he was. “However, should you decide to make an effort, I suggest you start with looking less... cozy in that chair and more... mature. If it is within your ability at all,” he added in clear challenge. “Excuse me.”
Kirk glared after him, as Spock retreated toward the science station. Suddenly the captain grinned.
Challenging me, Spock? Really? Oh, you don’t know what you just signed up for.
