Went to see "Public Enemies" today. As this is the third time I've tried to do this entry behind a cut for those of you who haven't seen it and it hasn't worked...I'm not going to this time. You're officially on your own.
Look wise, this was gorgeous in period detail and costuming. Michael Mann has always been a very visual director and this just emphasized it with all the attention to detail. To be honest - I have no idea if he got things historically correct, and I don't really care. Didn't go for a history lesson. Went for the sole purpose to drool over gorgeous men.
Especially one in particular. And the moment I saw Rory Cochrane in period clothes holding a shotgun I turned into a puddle on the theatre floor.
That's not to say that Johnny Depp wasn't eye candy, because he was. And so was Christian Bale. And I was thinking about seeing this before I found out about Rory just to see them in period suits. (Yes, I am that shallow - because Depp could just stand there and I'd be happy. And while Bale isn't my cup of tea, I can certainly understand why several people on my flist would want to dip him in chocolate and lick it off him. Slowly.)
But for me, seeing Rory on the big screen dressed like that made me happy. Grinning like a loon happy. Thinking up ways I can use that totally scrumptious GMan look in a Horatio/Speed smutfic happy.
Some things that did NOT make me happy - the fact that he was onscreen for all of 10 minutes and with not a lot to do. And the fact that he died halfway through left me with "Lost Son" trauma flashback - I DID NOT need to see him shot to death again! (Note to his agent - Find him a happy movie! With him smiling in it! Where he lives at the end and everything! Maybe with him kissing/having naked time with a redhead as a bonus for putting us Rory fans through all the drama - that would work for me)
The movie itself held my attention throughout, with much action and shootouts. Moved right along with no lagging - was suprised that it went so fast when it was over. Violence level was what I suspected it would be - bloody, but not too gruesome. The love story between John & Billie was a nice soft touch, as was the moments making Dillinger a Man of the People.
My .02, for what it's worth? If you want to see a visually pretty film, or you're going to drool over Depp or Bale, this is good. Historically, it felt like cotton candy - a lot of fluff and shiny with not a lot of depth. You could sit and be entertained for 2 hours - might push someone curious enough to go look up the real histories - but it's definitely not going to make you leave the theatre thinking. If you're going solely to see Rory, see it when it's cheap. Or wait for the DVD. Because he is literally in it for maybe 10 minutes total. Granted, it's a very decorative and lovely 10 minutes (aside from the death scene). All in all - a good period action movie. I would watch it again - would even sit through it all again and not fast forward to the Rory bits :)
