This isn't directed at anyone in particular, just ranting. A secret on f!s today set me off. Normally I'm pretty chill and it takes some serious stuff to get me worked up, but I'm getting kinda sick of feeling like I'm doing something wrong just because I'm doing something that I like.

So I'll say it straight up: Fandom owes you jack shitYou find ( Read more... )

genfic, pairings, you're not immune

Oh man, word.

And, dude, I can kind of see how if someone's pool is smaller and they have a harder time finding fic then they might feel like their suffering gives them the moral high ground somehow, but really? It doesn't, and people need to stop acting like it does.

Haha, you managed to phrase that in a much more succinct manner than me ♥

Ahurr, that's a first - normally I GO ON ABOUT IT FOREVER. Then again, this is a subject I've kind of been going on about forever at people quite a bit over the last little while, so I'm probably 'for god's sake guys mainstream pairing preferences do not make me an inferior human'-ed out. :| Really, thanks for this post, it gives a more eloquent (and public) voice to my frustrated gripings.

Normally I'm not really all that involved in the fandom - I've got my own little corner with my own little gang of people I hang with and mostly when fandom starts doing something I don't like I can laugh and ignore it. But this general feeling (cause that's all it is, just little digs here and there with people bitching and secrets on f!s - nothing actually directed specifically at me, which kinda makes it worse) that I'm expected to end my shipping ways and start writing Axel & Roxas platonic just because I should, because there's 'not enough of it' and cause I'm obviously crazy and go around thinking best friends = buttsex all the time was really starting to get to me. I know what a platonic relationship is. I'm in several myself. I've also got no problem writing them. But, ffs, I like writing Axel/Roxas, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. So why am I starting to feel like there is?

Grr, fandom, I wish I knew how to quit you!

I don't understand why there's so much hate for it anyway. It's an interesting pairing with plenty of canon interaction, and while I can appreciate that people like to distance themselves from the badfic and "stupid fangirls" that come in droves with any popular pairing, isn't it kind of like shooting yourself in the foot to let fandom colour your opinion of a ship so much?

So why am I starting to feel like there is?
Argh, that's what bothers me the most. The distaste for it is so widespread in "intelligent fandom" that it can be hard to participate at all without starting to feel a little like you're somehow a lesser fan for shipping it. I have trouble admitting I like it to some people. Arg!

Most of the stuff I've been seeing recently is not necessarily hate of them but hate of them as a pairing. Basically 'omg they're bff you're ruining it by having them buttsex!' I know a lot of people dislike it as a pairing because of the reasons you stated (which yeah, I agree, pretty damn stupid), but most of the stuff that's set me off has been this 'don't you know what platonic means, crazy fangirl?' shit that's being shoved in my face recently.

I've never had that Axel/Roxas shame, but I know it effects a lot of people (like I said, own little partially oblivious corner of the fandom.) It's kinda stupid how fandom holds itself up high as being open and diverse and yet starts shunning people left, right and centre at the drop of a hat.

That's what I meant - I don't get the hate for the pairing. The idea that it's somehow more acceptable, worthy or valid to write practically any other pairing, when this is one that has so much going for it. As soon as you take a step back from the OMG THEY ARE RUINING MY FANDOM WITH THEIR YAOI reaction and take a look at fandom, it's obvious that it's not just stupid fangirls who ship it, and it's baffling that this generalising attitude is so prevalent in the areas of fandom that are supposed to be made up of the 'intelligent' people.

It's very stupid indeed that there's so much shunning as goes on in fandom when the whole point is that we're supposed to be united by a common interest. Nobody else's interpretation of canon threatens your own, guys! We can all think whatever we like and still get on!
