This past weekend, Lisa replaced the toilet seat in the master bathroom. The darn thing developed a case of black mold, and nothing we did to clean it (bleach, vinegar, various household cleansers, spraying with Lysol) got rid of it. Indeed, eventually we ended up scraping some of the finish off the old seat. So we bought a new one at Lowe's. At first it looked like we were going to be stuck buying one that was made in China, but it turns out that one brand is still US made, and it was less expensive than the Chinese ones.
Lisa removed the old seat and started to install the new one. But the plastic bolts that should hold the new seat in place wouldn't hold tight. The new seat just wobbled. After a lot of fussing around, Lisa figured out what was holding things up.
See the little bits sticking out of the bold near the base? If the holes in the toilet are large, these "teeth" are supposed to old the bolt in the hole. However, the holes in our toilet are small (about the size of the bolts) and no amount of tightening would force the "teeth" into the hole.
Lisa cut the "teeth" off the bolts, and they worked just fine.
I'm happy to get the moldy bits out of the house and into the trash.
