Yesterday morning while I was washing dishes, I spotted a quail perched on the fence near the bird feeder. I wondered if he thought he was small enough to get at the bird feeder, which he was not. Eventually, I figured out why he was there.
Carefully and slowly looking out the front door so as to not startle them, I saw that there was a female scratching around the base of the feeder. She also at one point started digging deeper into the loose dirt. I wonder if she was trying to build a nest there. It's not a good location, as Lisa and I go to and fro along the sidewalk.
So I reckon that the quail on the fence was keeping a lookout from a convenient high perch while his mate scratched up food.
