When Trump was elected, I tried to calm my feelings of doom by telling myself it was just one person and how much damage could one person do? I think we're seeing the answer here.

The short term thinking of many of the political activists, of all sides and stripes, is spreading to fandom as well. Unfortunately those who try to hold with traditions are ruthlessly pushed aside by the newbies who want what they want, and want it right now.

Concepts which used to be respected and treated as the foundation of our society are increasingly under attack, both in the larger world and in fandom. Did I like or agree with the result of one or two votes at the business meeting at Chicon? No, but the majority saw things differently, they prevailed and I accept that. Unfortunately, certain types are willing to accept the rules only when it is in their favor to do so and finding ways to game the system seems to be the new fannish sport of choice. A con committee of dubious competence is a temporary problem. Rot eating into the heart of the system is a different matter entirely. It's worrisome.
