It's not often that you find a vegetarian restaurant in meat-loving HK and in my last two years here I haven't been to any. Then this week came along and now I've been to two vegetarian places! One of these restaurants was the bookworm cafe on lamma island.
Basically, the housemate has guests and we decided to go to lamma for brunch. The bookworm cafe is listed as one of the top ten outdoor brunch places in HK (they have indoor seating too, which we chose as it was pretty hot today) and I must say that it lived up to it's billing).
The food, drinks and service is pretty good. Prices are pretty reasonable. I also got the impression that most of the ingredients are organic. It's very different from it's fellow restaurants on the "top ten" list as it's vegetarian and not exactly a posh restaurant. It looks and feels more like a backpackers cafe, especially with the shelves off old books on one side and quirky positive sayings decorating the restaurant. Definitely somewhere to go if you are not an atypical HK tourist.
The whole experience can be made more interesting by doing an easy "hike" from, sok ku wan, the smaller village on lamma island to the main village, yung shue wan, where the bookworm cafe is located. It's more like an easy walk as the entire pathway is paved. There are small hills but nothing very challenging. It's also fairly scenic as the path is along the seaside. There is also a nice grilled corn place and tau whey store en route for a break. All in all, it's abt a 2 hour walk all in between the villages (including the food stops). All this is an easy ferry ride from central (40 min to sok ku wan and 20 min to yung shue wan). That's one of the things I love about HK, being a short ride from nature. Anyway, this is definitely something I'll do again and maybe next time i'll try the seafood that lamma is famous for!
