The doorknob clicked and Nozomi’s eyes flutter open. The morning light poured into the room in between the cracks of the curtains. She looked at the clock on the bedside table and it was only six in the morning. She sat up. Her door opened slowly.
“Who’s there?” she asked.
The man standing by the door was someone familiar. Nozomi crawled out of bed and jumped to her feet, running towards the man.
“Shingo-niichan!” She threw her arms around her brother. “Where have you been? Where’s Oniichan? Is he alright?”
Shingo pulled away from Nozomi and smiled gently at her. “He’s alright, Nozomi. Don’t worry.” Shingo closed the door behind him. “How are you? Are you well? Did anything happen while I was gone?”
Nozomi shook her head. “Otousan is still not home from the business trip and I’m worried. And then you and Oniichan left without saying anything and then Maruyama-san came over telling me that you told him to come and babysit me and-“
“Shh, shh, calm down, Nozomi. I’m here, okay? I’m here.” Shingo placed both his hands on Nozomi’s cheeks, as if to reassure her that he was there. “Listen, I need you to get dressed and pack up some clothes okay?”
“Wait, why?”
“I can’t explain it to you now. We have to hurry.”
“I-I don’t understand. Why-“
“Nozomi, have I ever lied to you?”
Nozomi shook her head.
“Do you trust me?”
Nozomi nodded.
“Then there’s no reason for you to stop trusting me now. Go change. We have to go.”
Shingo left the room and Nozomi did what Shingo told her to do. She washed her face and changed out of her sleeping clothes. She packed some clothes into a bag and walked out into the hallway. She ran down to Shingo’s room and saw him packing glass bottles into a metal case. He closed the box and locked it. He kneeled next to his bed and pulled out a book from underneath his bed.
“Nozomi, grab that box and-“ Shingo didn’t finish his sentence. His eyes widened and in a split second he grabbed the letter opener on his bedside table. He hurled the sharp object at Nozomi’s direction and she ducked, wondering why Shingo threw the letter opener at her.
But then she heard something - or something - collapsed behind her.
She turned around to see a dead body. She screamed.
Shingo grabbed the box and then grabbed Nozomi’s wrist, pulling her out of the room.
“Shingo-niichan, who was that?” Nozomi asked.
“He knows,” was the only thing Shingo answered.
“Who knows? Knows what?”
“Remembered the dreams? The things you told me and the things I told you before?”
“Yeah?”
“It’s finally coming true. And we have to stop it.”
“How?”
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
Ryo and Tadayoshi dropped to the floor after five hours of training with Shota. The two of them were drenched in sweat while Shota was still standing, wiping the few beads of sweat off his forehead. Shota made a click with his tongue and shook his head.
“And you guys are supposed to save the world,” said Shota. “The world is doomed I tell you.”
The two men groaned.
“Fine. You two go rest and come back here in an hour. Got it?”
“Yes sir,” the two of them answered together.
Shota left the training room. Ryo lay down on the floor and stared at the ceiling. He lifted his right arm and stared at the charm bracelet on his wrist. The light from the ceiling illuminated the white half of the symbol.
“It’s only a matter of time,” said Tadayoshi. Ryo turned his head and looked at Tadayoshi. He was absently playing with his pendant and was staring into space. “Three more days and this will all be over.”
“So basically we have to kill that little runt and stop his bomb thingy or whatever, right?”
“That’s pretty much the plan.”
“Shouldn’t be too bad. Two against one right? We’ll win for sure.”
“Yeah…”
“Oh come on, stop sounding like you’re gonna die.”
“Maybe I am.”
“Wait, what?”
“I don’t have my family anymore. Revenge is not gonna bring them back so I might as well just die along with everyone else after the Sun explodes.”
Ryo stood up and walked to Tadayoshi. He looked down on the younger man, scowling. He pulled his right leg back and gave Tadayoshi a swift kick in the face, causing his to fall to the side. Tadayoshi wiped the blood off the corner of his lips.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” Tadayoshi shouted.
“Look, I’m not about to die just because you’re being all emo and depressed that you’re family is not here anymore. I still have a family and as far as I know, you still have that cross-dressing whore and the girly boy as your friends. If you can’t save your family, the least you can do is save them.”
“What if I can’t save them? What if we’re not strong enough?”
“That’s where you’re wrong. I am strong enough.”
“You’re just full of yourself then.”
“And you’re just freakishly pessimistic. Are you seriously going to take me insulting you lying down bleeding at the mouth?”
Tadayoshi kept quiet.
“Weakling. Good for nothing asshole. I should’ve just killed you the first time I met you. It’s disgusting to be breathing the same air as you.”
Tadayoshi closed his eyes but almost immediately, it shot open. His eyes were red and his body was engulfed in flames. He let out a loud cry and got ready to jump onto Ryo. Ryo smirked. His eyes immediately turned blue and his body liquefied.
When Shota stepped into the training room, the first thing he saw was fire and water. It looked beautiful and it was as if the two elements were dancing. He didn’t have to help the two of them fight, he realized. They were descendents of a powerful being, they didn’t need training. Things like fighting and protecting came naturally to them.
“So I take it that the training is going fine?” asked a voice. Shota looked up and it was Hiroki in his wig and skirt.
Shota nodded. “I think they’re having an argument.”
“Keep an eye on them. We don’t want either one to die anytime soon.” Hiroki snorted.
“I thought it’s not polite for ladies to snort.”
“That’s why I’m hardly a lady.” Hiroki patted Shota on the head.
Shingo pushed Nozomi into the underground hideout and slammed the metal door shut. He locked and chained the door and made sure all seven locks they had on the door were secured. He dropped to the floor and finally caught his breath.
He figured from the noise the metal door made, everyone came out to see him. And it was only natural for them to ask what was going on. Shingo could only lift his arm and gestured for Shota to take Nozomi into the kitchen. Hiroki told Tadayoshi to get Shingo a glass of water and without any delay, Tadayoshi ran to the kitchen.
Shingo got up and walked towards the living room couch. He dropped onto the couch and buried his face in his hands. When asked what happened, Shingo told them what happened.
“So he knows,” said Hiroki, calmly.
“You damn right he knows.” Shingo was obviously edgy. “We have to get everything ready. By tomorrow morning the latest.”
“Get what ready?” Ryo asked. “What the hell are you talking about? You mean Shibutani’s guys were trying to kill Nozomi?”
“Y’all just do the fighting, we handle the magic okay?” said Shingo.
“She is my sister as much as she is yours, Shingo. Just tell a brother what the hell’s going on.”
“Look. When I say we’ll handle it, we’ll handle it alright? You don’t have to ask anything and just trust me.”
“But if you’re acting like this, how can we trust you?”
“You just fucking have to alright?” Shingo closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He tried to restrain his anger. “I’m just, gonna go into my room. Shota’s gonna explain everything to Nozomi and Hiroki, you help him. But I’m sure it’s not a problem.”
Without waiting for an answer from anyone, Shingo got up and marched to his room. He slammed the door close and dropped onto the bed. He stared at the ceiling and heaved another sigh. He grabbed a pillow and covered his face.
“Do you want to talk about it?” He heard a voice and then a click of the doorknob.
“I didn’t hear you come in.”
“Of course you didn’t. Your sigh is enough to make everyone in the place deaf.”
“Well. Fine.”
“So?” Hiroki sat down on the bed and pulled the pillow off of Shingo’s face. “What’s up with the mood swings?”
“That’s… actually a stupid question. You know very well what’s going to happen to Nozomi and me.”
“Well, yeah. I figured there might be something else that’s bothering you. Guess I was wrong.”
“Sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize for anything.”
“If only this whole thing doesn’t happen. I’m scared of losing you, Ryo and Nozomi.”
“You won’t lose anything. We’ll still be here.”
“It won’t be the same.”
“Nothing is ever the same.”
Tadayoshi placed a mug of hot chocolate in front of Nozomi. He was going through Shingo and Hiroki’s stash of food and found chocolate. He had chocolates as a child but hardly remembered the taste. He sat down on the other side of the table. Shingo, Hiroki and Shota were discussing their roles in the fight, Ryo was taking a shower.
“So you’re Ryo’s sister huh?” Tadayoshi asked.
Nozomi nodded.
“I’m Ohkura Tadayoshi by the way. If you don’t already know.”
“I’m Nozomi…”
“You don’t look much like Ryo though. You look a little bit like Shingo. But there’s something about you that reminds me of Ryo.”
“Both of them are my brothers.”
“Yeah?”
She nodded. “Although they’re not related. Oniichan - I mean, Ryo - and I share the same Mom. Shingo-niichan and I share the same Dad.”
“Oh.” Tadayoshi didn’t know how to respond. “Well, that’s…”
“It’s okay. I was surprised too.”
“So you have the blood of both kinds huh?”
“It would seem that way.”
Silence.
“Ohkura-san…”
“Hmm?”
“Are we gonna die?”
Tadayoshi blinked a couple of times, trying to take it what Nozomi asked. “Well… I don’t really know.”
“How come?”
“I don’t want to make any promises.”
“Oh.” Nozomi stared into her hot chocolate. “Ohkura-san has the same pendant as Oniichan.”
“Oh. Yeah. Guess we do.”
“Does Ohkura-san have a family?”
Tadayoshi shook his head. “Not anymore.”
“How come?”
“They were killed.”
“I-I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. It won’t bring them back either way.”
“My family is Papa and Oniichan and Shingo-niichan… and I think,” Tadayoshi noticed a tear dropped into the hot chocolate. “I think I want to do whatever I can to help save them.”
“I’m sure they appreciate it.”
“Is Ohkura-san going to help?”
“I guess I am. Going to help, I mean.”
She smiled. “Then I have nothing to worry about.”
“Why is that?”
“I just know these things.”
