Fraidy cat

Fear is a funny thing. Sometimes it's logical, sometimes it's not.

How can rats be terrifying, but mice not a bother? (That's not rhetorical, rats are dirty, gross and have big teeth, mice are just small and furry.) And why am I capable of sky diving, yet avoid climbing up steep inclines because I am terrified of falling over backwards? (That one I don't know the answer to.)

When I'm rollerskating I'm not actually afraid of falling over. I think I'm more afraid of the idea of falling over, or people seeing me fall over.

Every week at the skating rink they have a speed skating session. Not just one actually. I think they have one every session. They clear everyone off the rink and then let the 12 and unders go around the rink skating as fast as they can.

It's pretty impressive. Some of those kids are fearless. There's a little girl who blades and she just looks like she's running. They have an adult speed skate too but I've always been too afraid to do it.

Until today.

I kept on thinking that I wasn't good enough to do it, but then I realised that's not really an excuse, because last week I saw a girl do it who was on skates for about the third time. She was slow but she still did it.

I asked myself what the big deal was. What's the worst thing that could happen? I fall over? Big whoop, I've fallen over a lot. I fall over in front of about 80 people? Bingo. I would like to eventually do derby. And if I'm too embarrassed to stack it at the skating rink how could I ever skate in a bout?

So I decided to harden up and just do it (not sponsored by Nike yet but willing to talk to them if they want to start making skates). I managed to stay on my feet but I will admit that I wasn't the speediest of skaters. I also managed to hurt my elbow somehow. No idea how I did that because I didn't fall on it. Maybe I jarred it by running into a wall to avoid doing a T-stop (a little bit afraid of doing those too).

I wouldn't say I am totally over my fear of doing the speed skate at the rink - I probably need to fall over once while doing it to realise it's not so bad. But I'm on my way. As long as there are no rats and no steep incline behind me I'll manage somehow.
