write_light asked me:
1. You said recently recced a fic that had a deeply personal connection. Do you think you'd write this sort of self-revelation into your own fics?
Probably not. I FAIL when it comes to self-knowledge and self-reflection. I tend to suddenly realize that I've been feeling bad for several hours, and have to play 20 questions with myself to figure out in what way. Am I angry? Hungry? Upset? About what? It's sort of ridiculous. While reading the fic in question I realized several things about myself.
Maybe if I write about everything else in the world, eventually there'll be a me-sized hole left in the middle for me to investigate.
2. Is there a real-world (nonfan) writer that you greatly admire as a writer? What works should we read by this author?
Oh, loads of them! I tend to read almost exclusively science fiction and fantasy, when it comes to pro-fic.
Old-school, I love Robert Heinlein. There are a few terribly silly things about some of his work that I blame on the era, but 'Stranger in a Strange Land' and 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress', among others, have some very interesting ideas about how human culture and family structures might change in the future. It's fascinating from a queer perspective, too, because he leads you through arguements #1-9 of 10 of why homosexuality would be a part of this scenario and then stops dead. And you're left thinking, 'That HAS to be intentional, right?' I'm just impressed he got away with the inter-racial relationships.
Ursula LeGuin draws entirely new and different worlds. Oh, the way she uses language - *sighs happily* You might enjoy 'Wizard of Earthsea' or 'The Dispossessed'.
And Neil Gaiman is just fucking fabulous. The man thinks and writes at a diagonal to everone else. The Sandman series, 'American Gods', and 'The Graveyard Book' are all excellent.
3. Drink straight from the milk (or other) container - Y/N?
No way! I'm clumsy enough I have a 50-50 chance of spilling down my front, drinking from containers.
4. Best writing environment for you? Describe the setting.
Gimme a computer with internet access for quickly looking things up, access to my iPod, and no interruptions. That's all I need. The internal requirements are more strenuous than the external. I really have to be in the mood for writing.
5. I have very strong responses to colors - do you, and if so, which colors? Bonus points for posting samples. ;)
I like colors that are dark, rich, and textured. Indigo,
mahogany, colors like that. I have some sensory integration issues, and when those are acting up, bright colors, particularly in red to orange tones, can be literally painful.
This would be like a punch to the face, on a bad day.
