Caution: Heart at Risk!

{ Chapter 6 }

Chinen returned the hospital, with his shoulders down, his face covered with sadness. He felt as though his heart was about to explode that time. he hated his self so much. He hated it and he felt even bitter than ever.

“Where’s Daiki?” his mother asked, she was sitting beside him, he didn’t even noticed her.

He looked down. “I…I pushed him away and let him go back to Japan.” He answered.

Concern clouded his mom’s face. “Why did you do that?” she asked.

“What for? He didn’t love me… he can’t return my feelings,” he pointed out.

“Or, are you just afraid?” she asked with a smile.

He looked at her. Was he just afraid? Maybe. That must be it. “I-I was just afraid that I’ll get hurt, Mom…” he confessed. “I don’t think I can take another heartbreak anymore.”

Her mom held his hand. “When you love, always expect to get hurt. Because your heart is at risk every time you do..” she looked at him with such understanding. “Because you accepted the fact that you fell in love with Daiki, that means, you must have been prepared to get hurt. Why don’t you just take a risk? Love is about risking, Chii. You never know what awaits you after that. Happiness tastes so good after your risk; you’ll see that it was worth it.” Then she smiled.

His eyes got misty while looking at her. “W-what am I going to do now, Mom? He already left…” he said as he made a sad face.

She just laughed. “Why don’t you just go to Japan?” she suggested.

“What about father?” he asked.

“Go to Japan, confess to him and bring him here.” She said and winked.

He smiled. Now, he knew what to do…

Both their attention was interrupted by a TV news report.

“Good afternoon, everyone. Now, sorry to interrupt your afternoon as we brought to you a flash report. Earlier today, it was confirmed that an airplane to Japan had crashed.”

He swallowed. No way.

“And it was said that no one made it out alive…”

He completely became numb. And his surroundings blacked out.

“Chinen! Chinen!”

That was he heard before he fell to the ground.

He opened his eyes and surprised to see he was lying on a hospital bed. He looked around and saw his Mom and sister’s worried faces. He tried to smile at them.

“I-I’m fine,” he said, though, his tears started falling from his eyes. “I’m fine…”

He never knew how it felt being bitter until he watched the news. The report kept on playing on his mind. He couldn’t believe it. No, he refused to believe it. Daiki couldn’t be one of those passengers, right? There might be a hope he was still alive, being enthusiastic and still kicking.

He got up from the bed and immediately went beside the phone. He dialed Yuto’s number. He might know something. He was waiting impatiently until Yuto answered it.

“Y-Yuto-kun…?” he asked, hoping Yuto didn’t know a thing.

But he heard Yuto took a deep sigh. “I-I’m sorry to hear it, Chinen.” His voice was broken.

He covered his mouth to prevent his sob from coming out. His tears were already falling endlessly on his cheeks. The phone dropped from his hands unto the floor. His hands were shaking and his knees got weak. He sat to the floor, still crying, until his mom and sister came to him and hugged him. No matter what, that didn’t help him to ease the pain.

If only he didn’t let Daiki leave. If only he didn’t push him away. He hated his self awhile go but now, he cursed it. Why can it be that after he was ready to face his feelings, the person he loved wasn’t there anymore, that he was already gone, forever? Reality was really harsh. It hurts to believe it.

Now, he was just left with memories. Memories are really precious and sweet but now he knew it can also bring pain. Especially when you know you can never experience those things back. If only he can turn back time, he should have confessed everything to him back in the restaurant. Why was he being hard-headed during that time? It was already there. The sign that he had hope that their feelings were mutual.

“Chii, you need to rest,” his mom begged, she was teary-eyed.

His sister helped him stood up and he did, as if he was lifeless. It would have been better if he was, thus, he can’t feel this deep stab on his heart. This might have been the greatest pain he had experienced. He might be ready for a heart break, but losing Daiki was just too much to bear.

He continued crying until it became sobs. His shoulders were even shaking.

They let him lay down on the bed again. He turned to his side, avoiding to look at them and continued crying.

When they were in restaurant, he knew he lost Daiki. This time, he lost him again… forever.

***

One month had passed and his father already recovered. The doctors suggested to bring him back to Japan, to a province specifically, for a fresher air.

He tried killing his time by taking care of him. He focused his attention to his family more, but never to his self. Now, as he watched his reflection to the window of the pet shop where he was, he wasn’t surprised to see that he had gone paler and thinner. Dark circles started appearing on his eyes. It was like he was aging.

He sighed and sadness started to wash in his heart. It was the same pet shop where he first talked with Daiki. Speaking of him, it has already been a month after that terrible news. He still hadn’t moved on. He was still bitter. He didn’t manage to cope up after his loss, and he think he never will.

He will forever treasure his feelings for him. He decided to not open his heart for someone else. Maybe he would, if it was still Daiki.

He smiled bitterly and wiped away the tears that had managed to escape from his tired and swollen eyes. Now he saw his eyes were perfectly blank. Now he saw it, in his own eyes. Do you remember that he was wondering if his were blank? When he was looking at Daiki’s blank eyes when they came to Osaka? Now, he saw it. His own eyes, blank.

“Hey~”

Someone interrupted him, somewhat, that voice was very familiar that he can never forget. He looked to his side and almost fainted when he saw… Daiki. Yes, Daiki Arioka was standing beside him.

“D-D-D-Dai-ch… D-Daiki,” he uttered under his breath. He was having hard time breathing. “Is that really you?” he asked.

The guy beside him smiled. Those wide smiles he had always showing to him. “What do you think?” he asked and went near him.

He flattened his hands against Daiki’s chest to stop him. Yes, he managed to. But it was a mistake. He felt his chest against his palms. And he can perfectly feel his heartbeats.

“Y-You’re alive,” he said as tears started flooding to his cheeks again. It wasn’t even a question.

Daiki pouted. “Why, you really want me to be dead?”

“T-That’s not what I meant… I was just so happy that…” he sniffed. “You are here beside me… So alive.”

His tears continued to fall, no need to stop them anymore; it’s tears of joy anyway.

“I refused to give in to death…” Daiki said as he looked at Chinen lovingly. “Because I want to be with you.”

“I’m sorry I pushed you away that day. God knows how much I hate myself doing that to the man I love.” He said in between his sobs. “I was playing hard-to-get. And you, stupid penguin, just walked away…”

“I would do anything you want me to do.” Daiki tried to explain. “Even if you want me to die now, I would.”

“Now, why should I do that.” He shook his head.

“I guess I fell in love with you back when we were in Hawaii. You made me realize that when you kissed me. But you left the day after that.” Daiki said at last. “You made me realize that I got over Yama-chan.”

Now, it was his turn to narrow his eyes with shock.

“Don’t give me that face, idiot.” Daiki snapped. “Why do you think I went to California from Hawaii just to see you? Why do you think I kissed you in the restaurant?” Daiki sighed. “And why do you think I acted that way when you were with that idiot Takaki?”

He tilted his head, trying to come up with an answer.

“It’s because I love you!” Daiki exclaimed. “I just told you I fell in love with you. Were you even listening?” he continued as he gave him a glare.

He pouted. “I can’t believe it…” he said.

“I want you to know that I didn’t want to have just those damn six-month vacation with you. I want to spend my lifetime with you, I want to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with you. I want to share my bed with you. I want to share my house with you, my money, my happiness, my heart… and my love. I love you!” Daiki explained.

“Wait.” He shut his eyes. And tried to count from one to ten, but he was still in three when he opened his eyes, afraid that Daiki won’t be there anymore. “I think I just heard you said you love me.”

Daikib went nearer to him and moved his mouth closer to his ears. “I LOVE YOU!!!!”

He tilted his head. “I think I’m going deaf.”

“Not yet, please.”

“Wait,” he said as if he remembered something. “Yama-chan…?”

“I already said I fell in love with you and I moved on from my heartbreak from him.” Daiki said as he knotted his forehead. “Are you that slow? Or are you just simply an idiot?”

He whacked Daiki from head, tears starting to fall again. “I love you too! You stupid ass.”

“I can’t help it. I guess I didn’t show any effort that I got over him.” Daiki sighed. “And that I loved you and was always jealous with you and Takaki.”

He finally smiled. “Now, what?”

“Chinen, I’m sorry I was mean to you. I didn’t want you to call me ‘Dai-chan’ because I don’t want you to do the things that reminded me of Yamada.” Daiki explained as he wiped away the tears falling from his eyes. “I want to fall in love with you, not doing anything that would make me to. You can call me ‘penguin’, ‘idiot’, ‘stupid’ or anything you want.”

He still smiled. “Okay…”

“Don’t get close to Yuto anymore.” Daiki warned.

“Why? You like him?” he asked, suppressing a smile.

“Because he’s happy with Yama-chan.” Daiki said with a smile.

“I won’t,” he promised. “Because I have this stupid and idiot penguin in front of me.”

Daiki smiled brightly. “That’s good then…”

He looked at the thing he was holding. “T-That’s….”

Daiki grinned. “Hamster Ryutaro.”

“That’s mine!” he shouted. He forgot he left hamster Ryu when he went to Hawaii, maybe Daiki got it from his house. “Give that back!”

“Yada~” Daiki said as he walked away.

He pouted. “My hamster~ Give it back, penguin!” he whined, as he remembered it was almost the same scene as he first talked with Daiki. “Hey, you planned this, right?!”

Daiki smiled. “But it was worth it, right?” he went near to him. “Now, let’s go home.”

“Where?”

“To my house.”

“You have a house here?”

“I have. I’m rich, you know. Rich.”

“Okay.”

“You need to sleep. You look like a ghost.”

He pouted. “That’s mean.”

Daiki smiled and gathered him in the arms. And, right then and there, in front of that pet shop, Daiki gave him the sweetest kiss he ever experienced. Love was worth the risk, you don’t have to be afraid. You never know what tomorrow brings you after you got your heart broken. Because life without love, was not life at all.

“I love you, penguin.” He said in between their kiss.

He felt Daiki smiled. “I love you more, squirrel.”

Then they kissed again.

“I’m glad my effort paid off this time,” a passerby said.

“What did you do?” one asked.

“I stole that hamster.” The other one answered.

“Hah. My effort was greater than yours, I contacted Yuto to tell him to act that Daiki was dead.”

“Nah. Mine was the greatest.”

“What was it?” the two asked.

“I…” the other one said. “Just kidding. I didn’t do anything. Hehe. I just supported Takaki-Ouch! That hurts Hikaru.”

“Shut up.”

He broke their kiss and looked at the three who passed by. “Was that Takaki, Hikaru and Keito?” he felt Daiki stiffened. “Daiki?”

“Nope, don’t mind them.” Daiki smiled. “Now, let’s continue our kiss.” Then he swiftly kissed him again.

They have a lifetime ahead of them now. Tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, the day after tomorrow’s tomorrow,  and forever… together.
