A sociable Wednesday....

May 18, 2022 19:46

Today's forecast: 21C/70F cloudy although it felt very humid and warm for most of the day and there was lots of sun up until lunchtime.

I had a few chores to do this morning, and then set off to meet with kathyh at the Dulwich Picture Gallery to see their exhibition Reframed: The Woman in the Window. The train got me there on time and we spent a very enjoyable hour or so wandering around the exhibition looking at different artists' interpretations of the classic pairing of a figure and a window. Under the cut for a few photos of the art that stood out for me (or at least some of the art that was easy to photograph (some of it was behind very reflective glass so I couldn't photograph it easily).

Rembrandt's Girl in the Window which was the inspiration for the whole exhibition and which lives at the Dulwich Picture Gallery as part of the permanent collection there.

Woman in a Red Dress attributed to the Dutch painter Gabriel Metsu (1690-69). I like the frame!

Saint Avia (the Jailed Woman) 1450-1500. This would have been set into a wall so that people could have prayed directly to Saint Avia  who was imprisoned because of her Christian beliefs but sustained by bread kneaded by angels brought to her by the Virgin Mary. The head was around life-sized and fascinating.

It was good to see a Picasso

The Mother of Sisera (1861) - a painting by Albert Joseph Moore of Fanny Eaton who was also a model for the Pre-Raphaelite group of painters. I think she has a really interesting face.

The exhibition had some great examples from all over the world. I really liked these Two nobelwomen at a window from Jaipur in India. Usually, this window would have a carved jali (a carved screen) to cover it.

I think this is my favourite painting from the exhibition by Catherine Caroline Cathinka Engelhart in 1894 The Artist in Her Studio. The light is controlled by curtains and veils and the artist is leaning with her back against the window.

After we'd seen the exhibition we headed off to our favourite Greek restaurant just along the road and we spent a leisurely lunch chatting and catching up which was fun. The time always flies by!  We headed back on the train to our respective stations after a very nice visit and Mr Cee picked me up from the station as we had a Nordic walk booked for the evening and we drove straight there.

So lots of walking today as I managed to clock up over 12,000 steps and nearly 6 miles of walking!! I'm glad we went on the walk as we had some lovely views!  Everything is so green!

There are supposed to be thunderstorms later - hopefully, that will clear the air a bit.....

Today's question: 18. What’s the best way to start the day?
Slowly - I like to wake up without the alarm (we still use one in the week because Mr Cee is still working) then a leisurely breakfast and kitty cuddles (because they love a cuddle in the morning) and a nice cup of coffee.

The rest of the questions are here.
