This weekend was one of my last trips to NY for a while, as I am going to Massachusetts next weekend, and as I find I am running out of money and must thus economize. I had been thinking of mostly food costs when I thought I could go to NY almost every weekend, but the inter-city travel costs, and various random expenses have drained my account, and thus I must now sit sadly at home.
(I am however coming up the weekend of Oct. 22nd to attend the
GLAAD OUTAuction with An
mizo_no_oto, and hopefully make An and JJ
thegreatmissjj finally watch "Breakfast on Pluto.")
This weekend was fun, and remarkable because I actually managed to put in some good work time! I met with An on Saturday to help her get ready for an uptown party (she is a busy, busy photographer-girl) and then went over to JJ's for chatting, whisky, and pirates. (You have to have the pirates.) I will admit I think I did not behave most appropriately where the whisky is concerned, but I shall endeavor to forget that.
Sunday An had another photoshoot, and I slept in, but then we met up for food in the East Village again, and after that I was actually responsible and spent the rest of the day/night at ALT Cafe, doing my reading. I have to say, I am beginning to really like this place, despite my initial misgivings due to the surlyness of its staff. While the first time I went by the baristas seemed downright hostile, they've since become rather nicer, and almost... endearingly sullen. There was only one person on duty this past Sunday, and he was both sulkily cute and, unfortunately, camera-shy. Other than the cute-though-misanthropic staff, another point in the cafe's favor is that they have several vegan desserts, including some delicious brownies.
A photo showcasing both the brownie, and the general
mood of the establishment--bus your own damn table, indeed. (Actually, the oddly nice barista cleaned up after a lot of people that night.)
Also, there is robot-art on the walls, and beautifully comfy armchairs.
I could spend a lot of happy reading-hours there.
The beauty that is Jersey City. This is where I take the bus in.
St Mark's street, East Village. This is where An and I end up every single time. And if I'm not with An, someone else takes me there. I might as well put up a tent. Well, they do have good cheap Japanese food there.
Some teenagers hanging out, as is their wont:
This young man didn't want to be in the photo, but for some reason wanted me to photograph his tattoo.
The creepy side of NYC:
The best thing is, just as I was looking at this poster, one of those "Please watch out for suspicious activity and report it, thank you for being vigilant and helping us maintain your safety, surveillance surveillance hurrah" announcements was being broadcast over the subway speaker system.
