1st day of excavations
hiya, wednesday is so close! i am getting on very well. the dig started today. after a tour of the site again(going over things we had already learned about in the classroom) we re-sorted the finds from last year (pottery fragments, bricks with stamps, marble pieces, fresco pieces, small finds) for a couple of hours. then we actually got to use our trowels and things. we did a lot of uncovering of the walls and mosaics that they found last year. its very hot, tiring work, but its really interesting. i have to wear a bright blue hard hat. they are almost religious about putting on sunscreen and bug spray, taking water breaks every 40 mins, then an hour lunch break. the food for lunch that we've kept hearing about was nice. pasta, and some turkey, and vegetables, and fruit, and iced coffee. i dont know how they expect us to work every day after such a big lunch. most of the real archaeologists are italians and seem to be very nice and professional at the same time. we were all COVERED in dirt afterwards. very nice shower back at the apartment. now we're all at the internet place and are going to go take a nap back at the apartment when we're finished. from what we're told, after the first week we'll get used to it and be able to go visit things when we're finished in the afternoons. after our showers.
