So the internet is on fire with speculation about the trademark that Blizzard just registered: ”The Dark Below.”
I really hope this is the name of the next WoW expansion.
Imagine that we start out island hopping from Kul Tiras to the Tomb of Sargeras. There we encounter naga who are searching for a way to summon Sargeras. We defeat them there and follow them down to the ocean floor, into the sunken depths of Azshara’s palace. From there the Old Gods draw us down into the subterranean hollows of the planet, where far darker things lurk…
There are so many loose plot threads with the naga, Neptulon, Kul Tiras, the Abyssal Maw, the kvaldir, the Tomb of Sargeras, even the home isle of the Zandalar that sank in the Cataclysm, that there is ripe potential for an entire expansion out there.
I know a lot of people vehemently hated Vashj’ir, but I liked it and maybe they can keep the underwater combat to a minimum. Have us fight inside air pockets in sunken buildings, or inside a giant submarine, or something.
I know the assumption has been that the Burning Legion is coming soon, but I’ve long suspected that they’re at least one expansion away. This impression was reinforced by the fact that, after the Siege of Orgrimmar, Wrathion says something about how it would have taken a year to conquer Thunder Bluff, and doesn’t seem to think that an unreasonable delay. So that implies that we have at least a year before the ol’ Legion comes a-knockin’. (Assuming the whelp knows what he’s talking about.) ;)
The day before MoP was announced, I made a big post about how I was certain that we’d be getting a seas-based expansion, with Azshara as the star villain. Instead, we got pandas. Which have turned out to be very enjoyable, IMO, but still, it wasn’t expected, and the former queen of the Night Elves is still down there, plotting and scheming. It would be fun to have a female villain (besides Sylvanas, Magatha, Sindragosa and Vanessa VanCleef), and if they ever want to bring Illidan back it would make sense to do that when his old naga pals are running the show.
OR…total crack theory…we go to one or both of the moons to face some evil there, and the “dark below” is Azeroth itself, with all its dangers. Not likely, but I still want to go to the moon(s) someday. ;)
