The big news is that I have been to the hairdresser and had my hair cut. I must admit to being quite nervous about it as it's the first time I've had more than fleeting contact with people in a smallish space since lockdown began. It all seemed as safe as it was possible to be as everything was spaced out, customer numbers were limited and we were all wearing masks as we had been asked to do. The staff of five were all wearing face shields as they had tried wearing masks and shields and discovered it was really impossible to work. It was great to be back there as I have been going there for 10 years, they are a small independent local business and I am keen to support them.
Luckily they are only a 25 minute walk away (and I have always walked there and back anyway) as the advice still seems to be not to use public transport unless you have to. I didn't watch yesterday's press conference announcing the opening of swimming pools etc but it sounds as if someone did make the point that how were we meant to get to all these places if we weren't supposed to use public transport yet. Apparently it's all being looked at very closely (hmm..). From our carless point of view opening up museums, galleries and events in the open air is irrelevant if we can't get to them. The current advice is to walk and cycle where possible and while I am happy to walk there is no way I would be anything other than a danger to everybody on a bike. Doubtless these problems don't occur to people in chauffeur driven ministerial cars.
Anyway on with the meme.
7. Which art movement best describes you today (e.g. surrealism, dada, impressionism, etc.)?
I'll answer for today rather than the 7th as it was definitely surrealism. I was sitting in the familiar surroundings of my hairdressers with music playing, people talking and all seemingly normal until I looked at myself in the mirror with my face half covered by a blue mask. It got more surreal the longer it went onl.
8. How much do you “bring work home”? Do you work at home after work hours, or do you leave it at the office?
I'm retired now but I used not to bring actual work home though I always had to be aware of what might be happening in the area that I covered. Even if we went abroad I had to have a vague idea of what was going on at home as I would need to deal with it when I got back if there had been a big news story. Luckily for me what I did wasn't heavily political but you did have to keep abreast of current events. There are still moments when I think "Thank God, I don't have to deal with that".
9. Is there anything you fear that most people don’t seem to be afraid of?
Things like moths that flutter near my head. I'm not as bad as my brother as I did manage to go with my mother-in-law into a butterfly park without her being aware I was petrified, which he admits he would just refuse to do, but I am still afraid of them.
10. Would you rather be the funniest person in the room or the smartest?
Um...it depends whether people were laughing with me or laughing at me. If it was with me I would probably have to be fairly smart anyway so I will go with funniest as being the smartest person in the room must be very isolating at times. I can imagine I would spend all my time being infuriated with the stupidity of people and I do enough of that anyway.
