So this is Lockdown Day 53 or 54 (I've lost count)

May 15, 2020 16:16

I seem to have slipped a bit in updating. I would say we've been busy though we really haven't but it just seems like it. I've done another Paracise class and 2 Pilates classes so I'm actually getting more formal exercise in lockdown than I do normally. The weather this week has been really chilly but today is much nicer so we've been in the garden pottering with potting and potting on. We realised that we needed a mini greenhouse which luckily arrived promptly so J put that together yesterday in the nick of time as last night was very cold.

I planted some wildflower seeds last weekend and put some wire netting down over them to deter fox cubs and birds. It may have worked for the birds but this morning two fox cubs were using the netted area as a place to sunbathe. Hmm. I have had to order more bird food as the birds seem to scoff it down as soon as I put it out. I am not sure if it is my imagination but there really do seem to be more of them.

I headed most of the way into town yesterday to pick up Rex's (adopted old gent) tablets from Boots and everywhere seemed emptier than usual. I suspect it was the cold but there were fewer people about than there were last week when I made the same trip. Buses and trams went past me almost empty and I was allowed straight in to Boots. I was wearing my mask as this branch of Boots is small and was quite glad of it against the cold wind. There are problems wearing masks with glasses as they steam up but I was OK yesterday. J went out today to Tesco with mask on and had to take it off as he couldn't see for steamed glasses, which he judged more dangerous than anything else. I'll have to get him something else though we aren't planning on going on public transport any time soon.

We had a Zoom family gathering on Wednesday and heard all the news, which wasn't a lot. Niece R (the schoolteacher) was very busy allocating grades but is less busy now and would really like to go back to work if safe. Niece S (the midwife) has been working hard. She is mostly adequately protected though wearing a mask all the time is uncomfortable and they are getting very confusing instructions about wearing PPE. She has dealt with at least one person who tested positive for Covid-19 but that was over three weeks ago so she hopes she's in the clear now. Partner S won first prize for the worst lockdown haircut imaginable. Fiancee M seemed absolutely fine and had no problems with his hair so obviously Niece R may have missed her vocation as a hairdresser. Brother P had equipped himself with a number of bandanas and when demonstrating them looked like a slightly dubious bandit from an old Western. Sis-in-law K has been working all the time. Nephew M (job a mystery to everyone but something to do with supplying the building trade) will hear next week whether he goes back. Noises off were provided by Great Nephew F and Peggy the Puppy. It was good to see them all again though Zoom chats with lots of people are a bit noisy and Niece S's wifi was rather dodgy.

At least we have not had to suffer virtual bellringing which my friend K, currently stuck in Devon, away from her bellringing chums described as "dire".

As I'm still trying to take in the concept of virtual bellringing (so was K I think) I'll crack on with the meme.

10. Have you ever been sky diving, bungee jumping or scuba diving?

Are you joking! The only one I would have liked to do was scuba diving but my ears have problems with pressure due to perforated eardrums as a baby. Flying can be uncomfortable, though much less so now, so I suspect the same thing would happen with scuba diving.

11. What class at Hogwarts would you really excel at?

History of Magic

12. What new fact have you recently learned?

That, according to my friend L, you absorb Vitamin D best through your shoulders. I'm unsure of this one but apparently she was told it by her doctor. Hmm...

13. What’s something you were afraid of as a child? Are you still afraid of it?

Dodgem cars. As I don't like driving, yes.

14. What compliment do you receive most often?

"You're so sensible, Kathy." Boring but true.

15. Are you right- or left-handed? How competent are you with your non-dominant hand?

I'm left-handed and I am fairly competent with my right hand. When I first learned to write I could write backwards with my left-hand and forwards with my right. When this was considered undesirable I switched to writing forwards with my left hand (though I still form some letters backwards when writing fast) but I can still use my right hand quite well. I use my mouse right-handed and play tennis right-handed, though this could account for my extremely bad tennis. If I'm preparing vegetables I peel them with my left hand but cut them with my right. This can all be a bit of a problem at times as sometimes, as with sewing, I'm incompetent with both hands.

The rest of the May questions are behind the cut.

16 Which Muppet are you most like?
17 What are the people around you doing right now?
18 Do you give up easily on things when they get tough, or are you a stick-to-it person? Can you think of examples when your usual approach was the wrong thing to do?
19 You’ve just been chosen as the eighth dwarf. What’s your name?
20 If someone you were trying to impress was coming over to your home for dinner, what would you make for them? (Please include the recipe!)
21 Do you believe in soul mates?
22 What small thing can you plan to do tomorrow that you’ve never done before?
23 What would your teen self think of the adult you’ve become?
24 What’s the biggest problem you’re facing today?
25 What two colors do you think look best together?
26 Popcorn or pretzels?
27 What’s one thing you can do today that will make tomorrow easier?
28 Have you ever realized too late (e.g. after you've left the house) that you've been wearing an item of clothing inside out or backwards?
29 What parenting technique do you differ from your parents about?
30 Make a list of three things you can do today to be kind to yourself.
31 If you could acquire a talent without any extra effort, what would it be?

personal, virus, evil gardening, family, meme
