A miscellany

I haven’t forgotten that I’m supposed to be updating more regularly but not much is going on at the moment apart from the usual shopping for my mother and trailing backwards and forwards to her pharmacy for prescriptions that should be there and aren't. We were supposed to be going out for my ex-colleagues post-Christmas lunch yesterday but ( Read more... )

Having an excuse to visit independent cafes is a great way to start the new year but now I want a piece of lemon tart.

Good luck with your TBR pile. Mine has grown to crushing heights.

RIP Clare Hollingworth. What a fascinating life you led.

She really did.

The lemon tart was absolutely delicious and the whole shop was full of enticing looking treats. I'm sure we'll be back.

My TBR pile is in danger of collapse unless I do something about it.

I managed to go into Waterstones and not spend any money
:O
Self-control indeed! I'd never have managed.

What I didn't mention was that I went in there on New Year's Eve and spent some Christmas money, which meant I could resist temptation a bit more easily :)

Finally: this week’s Sherlock was a phantasmagoric whirl and I have no idea what’s going on beyond the fact that Mrs Hudson should have her own show.

Cavendish and I watched the episode yesterday evening. We didn't have any clue what was going on, either, but ended up rather enjoying it for the most part. Personally, I especially liked Watson's interaction with the imagined Mary. Not really sure what to think about the third Holmes sibling revelation at the end, though.

No, that was the bit that I wasn't sure about. I always watch Sherlock presuming I'm not going to have a clue what's going on, but I have been enjoying this series rather more than the last one. Watson's scenes with Mary were very well done and I'm sorry that's probably the last we'll see of her, though this is Sherlock so you never know.

It's hard when you have to be nearby to look after your Mum, but checking our independent coffee shops sounds lovely. We don't have very many left around here which is a shame (blasted Starbucks and Costa are taking over!).

Well done with the reading goal!

I LOVED Sherlock this week. It's was nailbiting! Wasn't Mrs Hudson badass!! :)

Mrs Hudson was wonderful. She should definitely have her own show and I wish they used her more generally.

We have lots of Starbucks, Caffe Nero and Costa but strangely independent coffee shops seem to be flourishing too. There are two almost next to each other which are in the parade of shops which I use to shop for my mother. They are very tempting some days :)

One of our local papers is running a poll to find the best independent cafe in the area, so we are attempting to visit some of the ones we don’t already know
That sounds like an excellent plan! :)

And good luck with your reading...

This might be the best summary I've seen so far!

Thanks :) Sometimes I think I know what's going on and other times I don't have a clue. It was great fun to watch.

I need all the luck I can get with my reading before the TBR pile collapses with me underneath it.
