“I’m your friend, John,” Alice whispered and he closed his eyes more tightly, tried to ignore her. She shouldn’t be here, in this state, in this city, in his bed. He had given her the chance to escape and she came to him.
John didn’t really feel like analyzing her motives, only Alice could understand herself. He stopped to try when she had smiled at him in the questioning room.
“Why are you here?” he asked, using words as a shield from her. Maybe to persuade his own mind, his body that Alice wasn’t good for him, wasn’t good for anyone and he should lock her in a cell and throw the key in the Thames.
Alice laughed, a rich sound that he felt rather than heard. Her small body was pushed against his back and her hand was raising goose bumps along his arm. She was tempting him, asking him to stop protecting himself from her.
Alice wasn’t a nymph, her song wasn’t sweet. But there was a poison in her veins, something that made her differ from other people, made her special. John hated her for that especially.
“I’m here to help you, of course. You need me, John. You need someone to lean on, it’s pathetic but I could be here for you, you need to let me in,” she moved higher through her speech. She sat on his pillow and started to caress his skull.
It felt nice and John had to stop from releasing a satisfying groan. It would mean she won and he couldn’t let her, he wasn’t like her, no, he wasn’t.
“No,” he whispered a little too quite, still considering her words, finding the right resolve. “You’ve killed your parents, you’ve killed Henry Madsen and you’ve killed Ian Reed, why in the hell should I need you?”
John felt sick saying those words because he was such a big part of it, of her life as she was his. He wanted to hate her, to be black black again and gray just not to exist. John wanted someone to get him back on track, but Alice could do so much more.
“Because I am your light in the dark, only I can save you,” she said as a fact and didn’t sound offended, she never did and when she later let her hands wander again, John stopped her but he also didn’t threw her from his bed.
This time, he thought and slept dreaming in black and white.
