The place needs more that “small adjustments” but Helen isn’t about to complain. For her, it’s still perfect. Strong walls, high roof and huge cellar place. Place for labs, hospital rooms, cells if needed.
The doubt she was carrying for few days dissolved like a mist and she stepped forward, her heels clicking on the stone floor. She walks and imagines, sees her future office, her own bedroom right next to nursery, sees big common room, dining room.
It even has a huge hall with perfect acoustics and Helen sees couples dancing, people putting their trust in her work.
“You chose well,” James says behind her and she ignores the need to turn right away. Even though he understood her need for her own Sanctuary, he still disapproves. But it isn’t just that and she strokes her belly in hope to get some agreement from her daughter.
Ashley kicks enthusiastically and Helen finally turns.
“I always consider my option carefully, you should know that,” her tone is soft.
James never really told her about his disagreement but Helen knew. His touches were more careful, his kisses full of sadness. He was preparing for losing her and she wasn’t able to persuade him otherwise.
Helen knew he wasn’t jealous, James never behaved this way. He was merely afraid of the future and what it will bring them, but Helen was as well. She decided to bring her daughter to this world and decided to do it all on her own. To start from the beginning, to build a new home, a new Sanctuary.
“I know,” he says quietly behind her and his hands touch her rounded stomach. The sun is setting and the ray coming through the half broken mosaic reflects an image of an angel at their feet.
It feels like a promise.
