Part of being a San Francisco bicycle person is knowing how to get around the hills where-ever possible. But sometimes it's not possible and sometimes I choose to tackle them in the name of fitness(HAH!) or just to prove something. Fort Mason is my Alpe d'Huez, but if I want to get over the Golden Gate Bridge there's a nastier hill to deal with. I'll have to think of something in the Pyrenees to designate that.
Well, I'm exhausted just reading your post. WTG!!!
I know absolutely nothing about the Tour de France, except that the leader wears a yellow jersey (at least, I think it's yellow???)
And I know little more about biking in general, but I think I remember that you gear down when you're going up hills, am I right? I haven't been on a bike in years, and I left mine behind when I sold my mother's house, so I don't even own one anymore. Been thinking I should look into getting one again, especially now that I can't run...any suggestions as to what I should look for?
All I can say is get the best bike you can reasonably afford and then adopt a good bike shop, preferably one that doesn't sneer at your for being a clutz, dork, newbie etc.
Yes, the leader of the Tour De France wears the maillot jaune. It takes a few years to even begin to understand the intricacies of bike racing and I spent most of my first decade of watching nursing a hate-on for Lance Armstrong. Now that he's FINALLY not a factor, I'm able to enjoy it a great deal more.
