Hatch Act summary

Mar 31, 2022 03:51

I reviewed some Hatch Act dos and don'ts for somebody in my position, as I'm about to get involved in organized partisan activity for the first time since before I became a fed. It looks like the main things to remember (until I retire) are:

(1) Cannot run for public office unless it is a nonpartisan election (like school board) -- which I wouldn't do anyway while I have a day job -- imagine me trying to run a school system while continuing my day job LOL, I can barely cook dinner some evenings before I collapse on the sofa

(2) Cannot raise money for the party/candidates -- I can donate, but I cannot ask anybody else to do so or link to a fundraising appeal on social media

(3) Cannot do any partisan activity while I'm on the clock or on federal property (it seems that during lunch break while teleworking is OK) -- including posting partisan stuff on social media -- and cannot use a partisan icon as my default social media icon

(4) Cannot use my job title while engaged in partisan activity -- that would be weird anyway

(5) Cannot try to influence coworkers, or others who interact with me relating to my official duties -- that would also be weird anyway

I think that's about it for somebody in my position. For example, I can use this "Vote Green" icon while I'm not on duty or on federal property, but it cannot be my default icon.

hatch act, let the wookie win
