One of my friends took the Southwest Chief from KC to Chicago. He parked his car on city streets near the Stuart Hall lofts and took the pedestrian bridge to Union Station. He didn't have any problems.

http://www.megabus.com might be another cheap alternative.

I took the train about this time of year last year from Lee's Summit to STL and my car was fine. There's a little bit of parking but it's all street-type parking, basically.

If it's in your price range, I *highly* suggest going business class. It's very spacious and there are electric outlets near each seat if you have a laptop you want to plug in (or portable DVD player, etc.) Also, if you have AAA you can get a discount on tickets if you book a week or so in advance of your trip.

I've only been once and was in spacious seats with electric outlets available. I was going to add, "And it wasn't business class" but I actually don't know that for sure. It was a special Amtrak shuttle to the State Fair in Sedalia, so maybe they used business class. What's regular class seating like??
