Cindy the SRNA - Week 2

Jun 05, 2010 13:07

Well, this week was infinitely better than last week.

I successfully intubated, and in an emergency, no less! :D Did some nerve blocks, masked and TIVA-ed and helped in another emergency! *woot woot*

My memory is getting suckier, I have no recollection of Monday or Tuesday. Actually, I don't really remember Wednesday either, aside from staying late 2 hours to help pump blood into a ruptured AAA. Poor guy, alive as he was rolling in, half dead coming out, passed at 2am on Thursday. It's such an odd feeling to think you've heard someone's last words, and they weren't words of comfort whispered to a loved one with their last breath. At ol' Lawless when a patient died, I always teared up when I opened the closet during body preparation and found the clothes they wore coming into the hospital, and would never wear again.

Anyway, Thursday apparently is ortho day at this place. Head MDA placed me in on of the rooms and was personally teaching me nerve blocks! He does it the old school parasthesia way, instead of using nerve stimulators. It was a lot of fun, actually! Can't wait 'til next Thursday to do some more! I was working with Mary that day and I really like her. She's sarcastic, stern, and really knowledgeable. Much more so than Donna, who I was with last week, who's really bitchy, stern, and pretty knowledgeable.

On Friday, I was doing all GYN stuff. I masked and TIVA-ed a D&E for an 18-year old, I successfully intubated 3 times, with a Miller, no less! I really like the blade, more than a MAC. My problem seems to be hesitation to insert the blade far enough into the trachea. I guess I was afraid of damaging tissue. Or teeth...
One of the cases was a girl my age getting her tubes tied. I thought there was some kind of issues with doing that on young people. The last case I did was an emergency add-on - an ectopic pregnancy in a 17-year old. These kids getting more action than me is kinda depressing. T__T The case went pretty smoothly, actually. I was working with a fabulous doctor, who doesn't do the cookie cutter crap everyone else does. Actually got to use Ketamine, Remi and Al, mask, TIVA. He's fabulous. Calm, collected. Does lots of nerve blocks, too! He's in every weekday, so I'm going to be on him like white on rice.

Actually kind of looking forward to next week. I wasn't really happy last week and sort of wondering about this all, but I feel much better about everything this week. The days have been long, the care plans boring and internet access is almost non-existent, but I am happier. I've even gotten used to the creepy house (buying an AC for the place helps, too), although, people keep telling me they plan on knocking it down in July to build a parking lot. I'm here 'til mid-August and I doubt the project will get off the ground in time. Hopefully, things will continue in this positive vein! *crosses fingers*

So, I'm home now and I'm going to kill my neighbors today.

Last Sunday they were playing their Eastern European music super loud and partying until well after 2am. Today, they started at 9am. Now they've added drums. If this Tylenol doesn't kick in soon, my head is going to explode...

skool, stupid neighbors, clinicals, yay!, srna, mah 'hood yo
