A man, a plan, a canal - not in that order

I keep forgetting to post the news about the application to make the Pontcysyllte aqueduct a world heritage site. I think some of you have been there. I'm sorry the online version doesn't have the Guardian's lovely photo of the aqueduct, with a boat crossing it. I can't find a picture as pretty as that online, though this one shows why you wouldn't want to go there if you were worried about heights.

And today I read the obituary of a modern hero: Dr Pramod Karan Sethi, who helped to design the Jaipur Limb. It's a prosthetic foot for amputees, very cheaply made and suitable for those who work barefoot out of doors and sit on the floor. I've never met anyone fitted with it, but I did handle one once, when somebody came to a War on Want meeting on behalf of a campaign to send them to countries with a big landmine problem. She said it was amazing to see amputees who'd been reduced to begging being able to go back to work within minutes of getting the limb.

world, death, canals
