Incidentally, I've tracked down the friend I normally visit on Gauda Prime Day, who hasn't been answering her phone since then. I was getting rather worried, but couldn't think of anyone who would know. But last week I had a phone call from the former secretary of my primary school (my friend was a teacher there, which is how we met) who was similarly anxious, and she had the bright idea of ringing the hospital in Stockport to see if they'd got her. They were willing to reveal that our friend was in what seems to be an annexe for geriatric convalescents, but for reasons of confidentiality couldn't tell us why. So, having called the ward to check she could receive visitors, I took the bus out yesterday evening to investigate. It seems to be a back problem severely reducing her mobility, but she appeared quite cheerful. She hopes to go home soon - I wasn't sure how optimistic that might be - but she recognised that it might be time to look at sheltered housing. Anyway, I'm feeling less worried now.
