Let us now praise famous women (and a few men)

I'm delighted that India stopped Australia beating their own record of 16 consecutive Test wins. Well done Irfan Pathan!

Talking of Pathans, there have been some cracking obits recently. Take this one about the Irish nurse who married a Pathan aristocrat and later became a politician fighting for the rights of Baluchistan, not to mention women's literacy and family planning, and whose funeral was attended by thousands of burly Pathans chanting "Mummy Jennifer!"

I was also very impressed by the illiterate Dalit woman, an exact contemporary of my mother, who took on the mining companies in Himachal Pradesh, because their dynamiting forced village women to walk long distances in search of water, and won.

Meanwhile, at home, I noticed my first cherry blossom of the year today.

cricket, death, heroines
