This week was my annual Summer Vacation/get the hell out of the office for at least one week a year/avoid office celebrations of my birthday (which really doesn't work anymore). Puerto Rico is a really beautiful place. There's a picture postcard quality to the coast that makes it almost unbelievable that you're in a real place. Blue sky, blue-green ocean, palm trees and white sand stretching out for miles with the shadows of reefs out to sea, with a breeze off the ocean taking the edge off the humidity. Arrived safely in Puerto Rico after a very long flight. The airport, although fully bilingual, is rather relentlessly the same as most American airports - pizza kiosks, Starbucks by the gate, etc. Then you get outside and there are palm trees and all the road signs are in Spanish. Last Monday afternoon I got on a plane to Las Vegas for business meetings. This was the first time I've really visited Vegas. I was there for a couple of nights three years ago on a business trip, but I flew in, went straight to the hotel (the Rio, just off strip), ate at the hotel and flew out right after the meetings I had to speak at.
